I have a Norinco SKS with a Dragunov-style stock (which was WAY cool back in 1994). Alway liked it, but it hasn't gotten much use. I have a budget AR that I keep for a trunk gun when the mood strikes me, but I really like it. And frankly, it is worth more than the SKS, so the idea of leaving it somewhat vulnerable in the trunk isn't great.

What says INGO on the notion of using the SKS as the trunk gun? If I go that route, I'll want a different stock for it, mostly for portability. The idea of the side-folding stock is interesting, but I don't have any experience with that stuff. I'm also open to throwing down the money for one of the bullpup kits, but I've heard mixed things about those.

I would go the bullpup route with it. I did a small trade with another member on here about a year ago, he traded me some ammo for a budget red dot to put on his SKS with the bullpup kit. He had the rifle with him that day, said he had no issues with it what so ever. Actually pretty cool for an SKS if you're not going to leave it in a military configuration.

Never even thought about a bullpup stock. Those look cool. I like this one.

I wouldn't put any money into an SKS. In factory config they run ok. At the end of the day it's still an SKS.

Same with these Mosin rifles. Seen people put tons of gunsmith in and stock on them and they are still an 80 dollar rifle at best.

Appreciate them for the historical value. I would keep the SKS as it is or sell it and get you a new 870 and some ammo

Forget the tacticool stuff, put it back into a proper factory stock the way its meant to be. SKS is a solid rifle in factory configuration.

I picked up my SKS dirt cheap when an acquaintance needed cash in a hurry. If it had the original stock, I'd have left it as is but it had one of the POS Tapco folders. Would have been fine for a trunk gun but I already had one of those. I ended up putting it in a Boyd's Monte Carlo stock. It's a little unconventional but I like it!
I've never taken a picture of it so no pic to post.

Keep it the same or restore to its original military configuration it was good enough for soldiers fighting in backwards lands its good enough for your trunk gun. Don't bubba up mil surp rifles its not worth it, it diminishes the value and usually ends up looking like crap and not working any better than it did before.

Leaning towards a more conventional Monte Carlo style. Which feels REALLY strange, because during the AWB, I thought it was ridiculous.

And thanks k_w for the 922(r) reminder. Shouldn't be a problem, as I recall dealing with it back when I put on the Tapco.

Mine came with the spikey kind. :)

Just in case an emergency bayonet charge is necessary. :D

Threshold question: do you have a neckbeard?

    If yes, keep it.

    If no, sell it.

    Ok, that's a trick question.

My beard grows quickly, and there's a patch by my adam's apple that sometimes gets missed. It can get out of control pretty quickly.

That probably doesn't count, does it?

I have two SKS's. One is in original configuration and the other has had a few mods done to it. I'm not into the "tacticool" thing. I kept the original stocks and removed the bayonet. I updated the trigger group and had the hammer, sear and trigger replaced with US made parts and updated Wolf springs. All work was done by Murray's Gunsmithing in Bovine Tx. The bolt has been modified for drop free magazine exchanges and setup for 20rd. Tapco mags. I also installed an AK style Texas Firearms SRR mag release designed specifically for the SKS. Works great. A Choate Machine muzzle device and a US made Tapco gas piston rod were also added. All these mods add plenty of US made parts to be 922r compliant without going all full blown bubba "tacticool"

Now some people might say "why did'nt you just get an AK instead of modding the SKS?" Well my answer to that is I personally like certain things about both the AK and the SKS and I combined both features together to suit my personal liking.

On the subject of SKS's, what are the magazines of choice? I forget what I have, but works perfect and the other is worthless. Pretty sure one is a ProMag and I'm thinking it's the one that jams all the time. I'd like to pick up a couple more this weekend at the 1500.

    Thanks, Matt

In my experience the 20rd. Tapco mags have been the most reliable.
