    Thanks guys for all the support, and, um, assertive advice. I had a very civil conversation with the neighbor yesterday. He did not doubt that the german shepard was the perpetrator and offered his sincerest condolences. He even offered to help pay for the clinic/vet bill, though I politely declined. The GS is now on a chain until some sort of fence is installed. I admitted negligence in not restraining Rufus, and assured him that our other dogs will be henceforth tethered when outdoors. Hopefully this will be the end of any future dog conflicts ... RIP Rufus.

    Again, very sad for your family regarding Rufus. From the neighborly viewpoint, that's a better outcome than one usually gets in such situations. I'm really glad you followed your own instincts and talked to him.
