Bought a Carrier gas heater & AC system.
    $9000 after $1716 manufacture rebate.
Hopefully, there will be a Federal tax rebate, like last time.
    95% 40,000 BTU & 2 ton 14 SEER AC.

I was out of town last week & the wife calls at 12:30 am Friday saying heat was out & house was down to 68* that night (63* by next morning).
I called to have a tech out at 9 am since the wife didn't want me to have a tech come in the middle of the night.
There was a $200 part that needed replaced, but there was a plastic "peep hole" that had partially melted.
It would have taken here was a $2000 part that would most likely need replaced after putting in the $200 part.
I was in for replacement when I heard the word "melted."

When we bought the house 4+ years ago, we knew the HVAC would need to be replaced since it had the original Carrier unit.
I'd already replaced a $200 part 2 yrs. ago & wasn't going to keep it alive any longer anyway.
We've had a maintenance agreement with Williams since our last new unit 10 yrs. ago at previous house.

I had 6 bids for a new HVAC system 10 yrs. ago in the old house & went with Williams then.
I had a Carrier heat pump installed for my HVAC needs.
Brought gas bill down from $142/mo to $50/mo & electric bill went down $20!
$9600 unit & paid $6900 after all the $2700 in rebates then.
Replaced a Heil system that was 35 yrs. old.

I like Carrier. They are usually good quality at a somewhat reasonable price. And they are common enough you can usually find replacement parts to fix things yourself. :)

I liked the fact that they are made here in IN.
I knew it would be easy getting parts if needed & not have to wait days for a part to be shipped in.

I worked at Godby Brothers on the West side when I first moved here in 1985 as a dispatcher before I got a teaching job.
I discovered that they used Trane & wanted to use them when needed, but went with Carrier b/c of the IN plant.
I guess everyone outsources to China & Mexico anyway now though & might "assemble" them in America somewhere.

From my personal experience, most of the big brands (Carrier, York, Trane, etc.) are all roughly in the same ballpark as far as price and reliability.

It’s the ease of getting parts that has always put Carrier/Payne over the top for me.

We weren't able to get a rebate on our AC, because I&M doesn't offer it to IN residents. Furnace was $200 through Nipsco.
Fed tax credit was only $450 max., so we only got it for the furnace. Nothing for the AC.

Good to know to look forward to the $450 next year.
Can't believe the State doesn't have anything.

    Install done.
Thermostat took too long to figure out & doesn't have a SN - ST scheduling mode or a vacation mode
    &
you have to schedule each day :wallbash: for a wake up & sleep time.
Thermostat was just set on 74* & it went to 76* before shutting off just now. :ugh:
Service tech couldn't figure out how to set up the thermostat connected to my cell. :coffee:
    Directions weren't responsive. :dunno:

I worked for an hour last night & an hour this am before calling Williams to come out & get thermostat to work.
It did not follow the schedule by going from 72* down to 68* last night at 12 am.
This am it did not follow the schedule going from 68* up to 72* at 7:30 am.

I checked & double checked all the inputs to the Schedule AGAIN, to make sure everything was correct.
Even discovered some wrong inputs that the Tech did yesterday.
I got those deleted, but furnace still never turned on.
I didn't want to override it by manually turning furnace on. :nono:
I wanted the Tech coming to see it as it was.
My wife was not happy keeping it 68* all morning.

Zachcz was aware of my problem & told me to send pics of the screen on the thermostat while I was waiting on the Tech to get there around noon.
He solved my issue w/i minutes.
The screen had the words, "Permanent Hold" on it.
I suspected that was the source of the problem.
I never thought that was correct but the Tech was OK with it.

Zach had me touch the "Permanent Hold" words & then like magic, a choice came up to discontinue,
    "Permanent Hold.".
Furnace started right up, since the Schedule could now kick in. :rockwoot:

    Nice to have friends.
I knew it had to be something simple; I just couldn't figure it out. :coffee:
I can't believe I never thought to touch the words themselves! :wallbash:

    Puzzling "Permanent Hold" engaged.

Thankfully "Permanent Hold" gone, thanks to Zachcz.

Don't get me started on those programmable thermostats.
When I got a new HVAC system 10 yrs ago in my previous house, Williams had to come back to deal with programming b/c it was impossible. :wallbash:
Strangely enough, the problem of it yesterday heating up to 74* when set at 72* seems to now be solved since it isn't locked into "permanent hold" now? pic before touching.jpg

I learned to keep it on my manual and turn it up and down as I wish. I am at home all day, so I dont want it cold the way the programming wanted it to be.

That's what we had in this house before replacement Monday.
My wife would turn it down at night since she is the night owl.
I turn it up in the am since I get up earlier.
    No problem.
What gets me is that this one doesn't have a "vacation" mode like our old house with a new HVAC with a programmable thermostat which was convenient.
If I can ever figure out how to hook it up to my cell, I could do it that way.

Curious if that new unit uses those 1" wide filters shown in your photos ?
I always assumed that the newer models used the 3-4" ones ? Not sure if wider always means better ?
