Do you reload ammo? If not, the 10mm will be expensive to feed when you can find ammo for it. If you do, 10mm can be a whole lot of fun to reload for. I have a couple of 10mm pistols and really like the round. The Glock G20 is one of the most powerful handguns around and packs over 10,000 ft lbs of energy per magazine. But, if you don't reload or if you don't own a .45, I'd probably recommend going for the .45. Everyone should own at least one .45. Preferably in a 1911. It's tough to get a more American semi-auto than the 1911 in .45.

I now have 3 guns in 10mm and a lot more in .45 ACP. MyEDC is a STI 2011 Perfect 10. The best shooting 1911 style gun I have ever shot.I use Underwood Ammo in it and it lets you know when you hit a predator with a200gr XTP. Same hit with a 230 gr XTP shows just about half the damage. Get youa 10mm and don't look back. I have an S&W 1006 and an EAA 10mmMatch/Witness cross. I can carry 20+1 in the STI. The Smith carries 8 or 9+1and EAA 12 or 13+1. STI turned mags are $100-$150 while S&W and EAA Magsare lots cheaper.

I really love 10mm. But I would buy the .45 first unless I reloaded. Ammo availability is a bigger issue then I realized. My one and only pistol is a G20sf. I don't shoot often, so the difficulty of finding local 10mm isn't as big for me as for some others.

With Underwood in the mag, there's precious little with more firepower in a reasonable package.

Pondered the same question and went .45 So far have been happy and no issues with ammo supply. For the # I shoot it fits my budget just fine.
