Peepsight aint cheap. New Marbles tang version aint bad at $125.........but that's 1/2 what I paid for the rifle.
Looking for a Williams FP at much less.
    Or a Marbles/Lyman/Redfield/Parker Hale in a junk box at a gunshow ;)

Found one. $250. Dunno if I got screwed or not. Find out if I make it to the range this week.

    DSC03600_2.jpg

Just looking at the photo doesn't make it look like a screwjob at all.
Yes, there is just a bit of inevitable wear on the metal and stock, but the condition looks excellent from this angle, and it's probably still very much mechanically sound.
Were I you, that would be the rifle to take deer hunting this fall, even over your Contenders or No. 1, if for nothing else than for the nostalgia of taking Arthur Savage's creation into the woods.

It's an EG............not collectible. Receiver is not D&T, which helps hold whatever value it has.

Barrel isn't horrible inside, had some light rust near muzzle. I can't tell how well it cleaned up (need glasses LOL).

No slop in the lever. Case color is gone though.

Could put a ton of $ into it, make it a sweetheart (re case the lever, new high comb stock, D&T and even slap on a better bbl).
Have about a K in it then. But it'd be a super cool rifle.

Run as is and see how it does come November.

Might leave it stock and just buy a nicer version. Or get a Rem 760/7600 in .300 Savage.

Stock was not the best on this one, somebody added some oil way back and did it half arsed.
I have about 5 hrs of steel wool, tru oil and blue touch up on this thing.
Looks way better than when I got it!
    Still is a beater though.
    A cool one.

    Dunno how it'll shoot.

Even if mediocre I'm gonna kill a deer with it, that's why I bought it.

Kind of an anti "sniper rifle/clickety click scope" rig.

Hanging out at my LGS.............it gets old hearing every other person "needing" BDC, target knob scopes, side focus and this and that.

Got my fill of that nonsense when people said they needed 80% letoff and 300 FPS IBO.

    Want it? Fine.

    Need it? Yeah whatever ;)

.308 Win has more zip than .300 Savage, so some at work are like.............why?
    Uh, it's NOT a .308 Win.

    That is why :)

But but but, you can get a Savage 99, with a box mag, in .308 win !

    Mmmmmmmmmm, OK.

Savage 99, pre WW2.........in .300 Savage..............if they don't understand that ...............eh, let them enjoy their plastic stocked package rifle.

    Some people hunt with rifles.

    Some riflemen hunt.

BTW, sold my.35 Rem TC Super 16 bbl.
Break opens and deer........always bothered me a little (in rifle).
Dunno why, maybe because I had a #1 before a Contender.
Man that little TC shot good though. Might come back to haunt me.

Shot the 99 in .300 Savage. Blast but not bad recoil wise.
    Sights suck.
Trying to find a deal on a peep. Marbles new about $125.
    Older sights, more money.

Tried to find Williams FP (non tang safety model). Even so, the front sight might need a new blade.

Can't find a FP............so was looking for a no gunsmith scope mount.

For a rifle made pre 1950?

And lo and behold, I found a custom maker. Uses tang screws and rear sight dovetail. Good looking and excellent reviews.
Not cheap, but if I ever changed my mind I could recoup 90% of the $ no prob.

Now about finding an old Weaver to slap on it.
I'll have as much in scope/rings/base as I do the rifle.

    All for a doe. Yeeesh.

Well here's an update to my original posting. I missed out on the Valmet, the damn thing had been on a rack for weeks and when I decided to go ahead and take the plunge it was gone....what a pisser. Did manage to get a couple of the Daewoo's and they are sweet ! Still looking at an SP1 but it may have to wait awhile as I am in an AK frame of mind lately. Also wanting to add another M1 Carbine to the fold as well.
Found an SVT-40 a few weeks back and had to think hard on that one as well...thought the price was a little too high.

I think we could hang out. SP 1 is gonna be mine.
Found a SP2 AR 15A2 at Greenfield. This is what it looks like now. It's gonna have to do for now.
