The people are demonstrating for more freedom and people have started to go missing ( the people are pissed)

China doesn't "own" us in the sense that everyone always uses it. Of US debt, about 27% is owned by foreign holders, and of that 27% percent - china owns roughly 20%.

This means China, in total, owns roughly 6% of total US debt.

The problem is more along the lines of...Who will buy our junk bonds? With our short term debt coming due and no confidence in our economy the chinese are the only ones with the disposable income to risk on us.

If the world realizes we've borrowed more than we can repay, they will lose faith and credit in the U.S.

That's all the dollar represents. The world just needs to lose confidence over time for it to happen.
