This is why I open mine annually. To make sure it is in good working order.If the valve doesn't reseal, it would be best to replace it, since it may not work as intended anyway. They are simple to change and pretty cheap. I had one that kept leaking. I replaced it in about 10 minutes.
As others have mentioned, if the WH is 5 yrs or older, it's a good time to replace it.

I looked into it and am all electric, and was told by experts that yes, you can do it electric, but its gonna suck.
I was told in the long run, connecting to the gas line at the street would be worth it if I REALLY wanted to go tankless. But still not recommended due to limescale issues here. YMMV
