if you need an FFL to legally transfer guns accross state lines, how are those good upstanding citizens getting out of state guns in Chicago?

Im in Indiana as the buyer and the seller is in MI.
Totally legit because an FFL is involved.I thought a long gun could be purchased in another state as long as you went through an FFL holder there, and then the Indiana owner drive back home with it. It is only hand guns that have to be first shipped to an FFL in your home state, in this case Indiana, and then the transfer completed in-state.
How unfortunate that ATF further continues it's uncontrolled stomping on our rights, as it was not too long ago that you could cross state lines to purchase long guns without going through an FFL holder.
I don’t think that the transfer of firearms from one state to another state has ever happened as that is not legal.

Mostly theft, but some gun running from the gun shows in Indiana.
