I have been thinking about a 22 rifle. My wife is disabled and kinda scared of the ar pistol. We also have 17 grandkids, some of which are plenty old enough to shoot one. I fondly remember my Dad's Mossberg, except when he found out I shot the wind vane on top of the barn, lol.

What recommendations do you have for a good rifle to plink with with the wife and g-kids? Budget friendly and easy to operate are about the only criteria so far.

Ruger 10/22. Stock is normally short enough for kids to shoot.
cricket if they kids are real small
if you are wanting a man size rifle the marlin 39a is considered the caddy of 22 rifles.

Ruger 10/22 all the way. Bone stock less than $200. Fun, accurate, and highly customizable if you so desire. Plus you can run 25 round mags too, which is a huge plus

As I recently posted in another thread. I have a CZ 455 FS that is as accurate as any 22 I've shot south of $1000. Nice wood stock; solid quality. No complaints. Outshoots my Ruger 10/22 but the Ruger is also circa 1978.

I have bought a lot of rimfires for kids so let me make another recommendation which is half the price of the CZ, the Marlin 15Y.

I bought a 15YN with the day-glo sights at Sportsman's Warehouse years ago for $125.

While I'm an Anschutz guy, a good used marlin or remington is my recommendation, a 10/22 is a choice but the triggers SUCK and the accuracy is just so so

Used older bolt gun, generally there inexpensive and plentiful

I like a 10/22 with a couple aftermarket add ons. The takedown model is handy and cool.

Recently picked up a pretty sweet Savage bolt gun. Inexpensive, but requires an optic. I like working a bolt gun and they are easier on the ammo hose. This Savage series is notably accurate.

The Ruger 10/22 is a great plinker. It's a bit smaller than a fullsized rifle, and it's light as all get out, too! So, it would be a good choice for kids. I've got a Remington 597, and I love it because it's bigger than the 10/22. It's more like a fullsized rifle in length, but it also has the heft. It would be okay for teenagers+, but may be too heavy/long for younger kids.

Good old Marlin model 60, it's what I started with and is still running good 35+ years later!
This, have a half dozen 10\22s don't hold a candle to a model 60 off the Wal-Mart shelf. Also for little ones the tube feed is easy and fun, magazines are harder to load.

    I'll second this .....

and you can put 1 or 2 bullets, in the mag.,

so the young ones, don't get carried away .....

I believe I would go with the Ruger American compact-short,light and the 2 that I have shot were way more accurate than stock 10/22's,plus the trigger was way better. This coming from someone who has 5 souped up 10/22's and several CZ's(which would be my next choice).Don't skimp on optics-only rich people can afford cheap scopes!

I have a few 22's, the older Marlin 60's are hard to beat. Very rarely are any used 22's hurt by the previously owners. You may want to attend a gun show and look over the offerings there for condition and price. For the children, the little Cricket is a pretty nice rifle. It is sized for children, and being a single shot, safer than the semi-auto's while training them. A used Marlin 60 can be bought for $100 to $150, a new one for $30 ~ $40 more. A new Cricket for about the $125, haven't seen many used as most people keep them as they are their first rifle!

Fundamentally, I'm a bolt gun guy. They feed any type of ammo, never jam, force you to slow down between shots (hopefully to aim) and are not a drain on the budget for ammo.
Our 4H program uses mostly bolt guns. We have semi-autos, but the kids just pull the trigger as fast as they can. A young shooter came to our match yesterday with a model 60, it wouldn't run his ammo. Maybe it needed cleaning, but he had to feed it one bullet at a time, and his girlfriend blew him away on score.

The Ruger American comes with 2 stock attachments, fiber optic front sight, good trigger, is accurate, and feeds reliably from a 10/22 mag. Good choice.

Semi auto marlin model 60 is my fav, but 10/22 and m&p15-22 are great as well.

Henry lever action is cool and tons of fun as well.

Bolt gun has tons of fine options, marlin, savage, ruger all gtg.
