To the OP, If being arrested for defending yourself is something that keeps you up at night research your local prosecutor's office and see how they've treated that type of case. If they go after people aggressively for defending themselves then move somewhere that's more friendly to the idea of self-protection.
That sounds like an extreme measure but if you're so concerned you're thinking of keeping an attorney on retainer just for such an event maybe you should consider it.
