I found out that the 870 is an Express, so like you said I'll just make a decision when I can see the guns in person. Thanks everyone for all the information.
I would choose the 1300 (actually I did choose it over the 870) Especially since the 870 is an Express model. ( Is the 1300 wood stock?)
I prefer the 1300 anyways, I like the controls and control feed vs bump feed, and it's discontinued.
The 870 will have more accessories/parts available if you plan on changing it up.

If the 870 was an older Wingmaster I would choose differently.

The 870 might be a Wingmaster. The 1300 will def be a 1300.

IMO, an 870 Express is slightly better than a 1300 as long as the chamber has been polished and doesn’t stick on aluminum cases (my express did until I cleaned it up).

Wingmaster is substantially better than the 1300.

You can find 870's all day long but the 1300 is harder to come by (especially if its a defender model). I guess the question is are you a collector?

It would probably be more of a collector's item/keepsake to remember a missed family member to me. I've never even shot a shotgun and may never shoot this one. All I really shoot much is my 9mms and 22lrs.

My BIL in Alaska uses a 1300 for his primary bear defense gun. I have an 870 Express for the same purpose. I like the slide release on the 870 better than the 1300. That said, the 1300 seems to be a wee bit faster to cycle between shots, than the 870.
