Years ago I rode with a relative. He made a DUI arrest, and when we went to holding cell he had to take his weapon off and secure it to enter that part of the jail. At the time I wasn't carrying, but wondered how that would have played out if I were...
You just wouldn't have went in I guess.

I'm curious about body armor on a ride along. Would it be advisable to wear rifle plates or is the need very rare? My vest is IIIa and the plates can get bulky in a car + add about 8 lbs. Mobility > bullet resistance imo.

For the record... I'd ask about policy but probably carry something discreet & would 100% have a small med kit with me.

The officer I ride along with advises me to carry and has stated that he appreciates someone he knows having his back. I've been out of the car on multiple calls and stops. I've also had range time with this officer and he is a good friend of mine, so that probably has something to do with it. If you don't know the officer, my guess is you probably won't be carrying or doing much. Let the officer get to know you and you get to know them. If you are doing the ride along because you are maybe wanting to become an officer then ask as many questions as possible and take it for what it is, which is an informative and hands on orientation.

No..... please don’t show up with a plate carrier on. If you feel the need and have one, wear a concealable vest.

A lot of times the issue isn't with the officers but with the liability and what the department's insurance says. My last ride along, I had credentials from another department and I had to be cleared from chief to be riding with another agency. No, I didn't OC and just had the lightest of NIJ certified vest under my t-shirt. I'd love to do another ride along but my brother works B watch and I am on day shift so until I go on disability or retire, I'm screwed.

I can't keep track of this - some say no guns, some say lock n' load! Some say a vest is tacticool, some say it's required...

Not sure why that’s so surprising. Every jurisdiction is different in policies, operations, law interpretation etc... that’s why it drives me crazy when people ask me stupid cop questions because everyone assumes that everything is uniform across the land. “My brothers uncle’s cousin said that blah blah blah.”

I’d venture to say that most podunk departments would probably allow it as they tend to not really have set SOPs and are more Barney Fife like with their operations. Any decent sized department with a halfway decent city attorney is gonna be a hard no for allowing anyone other than sworn employees to carry. At the end of the day law enforcement is all about liability management.

IE, check with your desired PD/SD of choice. I n my experience at various different sized departments, you’re not carrying and you’re not getting out of the car unless we’re taking rounds. Im sure there are plenty of people who could be assets in a SHTF scenario but there are far more who are not and it would be one other person to have to worry about.

I'm so O.G. I'm more silver than copper.

Best explanation - medically unable to perform the function of anything except a bodyguard or asset protection specialist. Old age, military injuries and treachery have caught up.

Ah! I feel your pain on the age and injuries. Mine were all very non-military, but I make up for it with extra treachery.

    Oh Brother.

I've now been retired for more years than I was on the job.

All those years running ghetto beats, running up and down fire escapes and across rooftops, jumping over walls, climbing over fences, couple of smashups during high-speed pursuits...my knees and hips are now on light duty status.

I can't run fast enough to get out of my own way.

Extra treachery is a redeeming quality. That and cool scars.
I can run but I'd prefer not to. Too many spinal appliances and apparatuses make my clunky. Goodman Campbell is getting all my insurance money now.

The upside of spinal injuries is that when you have enough permanent nerve damage, you can drop stuff on parts of your foot that don't feel much other than pressure and it doesn't hurt. Ask me how I know!

The downside would be . . . everything else.
