    You have to be careful about transporting firearms in checked bags. some states and cities have their own regs about transporting firearms and have confiscated the firearm and arrested the owner. Happens mostly on the east coast but you need to know the rules for any city you may layover in.

    If you are stopping in any gun-unfriendly states or locales, just be ready. Generally on a layover, you don't touch your bags as they are checked through to the destination. If you for some reason are supposed to collect your bags, just go to the airline baggage claim counter, explain the situation and REFUSE to take possession of your bags. If they remain in airline custody, you are fine.
