Everyone should do some knife defense classes to effectively get by the fear they have of a blade.

You don't have to be a MMA wizard to know a few evasive techniques to get enough time and distance to put your pistol to work. Of course, then it would really really pay off to be mighty efficient in the draw and front sight.

    This sounds fun to test.

If the first guy had seen it earlier and reacted sooner/faster there may have been more than one effective solution. Lot of ways to what-if things.

The point of good situational awareness is to see the threat coming. That provides options in many cases.

It's ok to accidentally bump into, back into, sketchy people to see if they're carrying. Maybe you need to get a hymnal. Bumping into a rifle in church.:dunno:

Learning to read body language and pre fight indicators can be very valuable.

Situational awareness is step 1 (Observe). I don't think they were unaware of him or that something was "off" about him.

Accepting reality is step 2 (Orient). Orient gets a lot of nice people without prior experience with violence. Nice people don't believe that someone is about to try and victimize them. They invent socially acceptable reasons for the person to act in the manner they are. They don't believe today is the day they may have to kill or be killed. You'd be absolutely shocked how many victim interviews include some variation of "I thought it was a joke" in reference to the beginning of an armed robbery. This is very difficult to train outside of real or simulated violence. Running mental simulations can help, as well, which I've discussed elsewhere.

What everyone outside of BBI has glossed over, they already were watching dude, cuz they knew he wasn’t quite right. So all the team should have already been on alert to potentially bad juju. When he got up and interacted with the usher, 1st security dude should have been up, and orienting. Didn’t happen, he paid the ultimate price. If the team didn’t have proper comms between them, that’s another facet to work out.

I think the orient even happened but they did not act soon enough. Throwing folks out of the building or some other preventative measure runs against the main mission of the church.

One thing church security has to include is how to appropriately deal with this conflict between the mission of the church and the security of the flock.

Church security dealing with the mentally challenged is one thing, as is dealing with someone wanting to hide their identity. Wearing an out of place garment to cover a long gun is different from those things.
