Mine is large and yet light weight. It has a huge hole, not a thumb stud. Carbon V steel blade takes a great edge. Oh yea, when I got 10 years ago, I paid $40 for it.

The Carbon V steel is actually very good.

I was just told this story by a friend of mine a week or so ago:

When he was in the military he found this old beat up blade overseas. He figured it was cheap and began using it figuring it would fail and he'd just throw it away. He said he beat on that knife for a long long time and was simply amazed that it took the abuse and then some. Later he started searching for what model of knife it was. He found out it was a Cold Steel made from Carbon V.

Knowing him, that is a pretty good testament to how well the steel holds up, especially since the other knives he had at the time were made by Jerry Busse.

They stole the idea, not the design. It happens all of the time in just about everything that is manufactured and yes they avoided law suits and having to pay royalities to Emerson by changing Emerson's design enough to get their own patent. Now, I think you know how I feel about Cold Steel's business practices and marketing....that is why I had a hard time defending them in this discussion. :D

That's mainly why I don't like Cold Steal also.

Around here, Cold Steel is kind of the fat redheaded kid on the playground that gets picked on a lot. And yes, that analogy was meant as a jab towards Lynn Thompson

Meh. I carry my CS AK-47 daily and it serves me well and keeps an edge. I beat the crap out of it and it still locks up tight. I've definitely had more expensive knives not perform as well.

Most of the Cold Steel haters have this attitude because of the business practices that Cold Steel uses, and not so much because of the quality of their knives. Cold Steel does not design (with a few exceptions) or manufacture any of their own product line. They basically steal/use other peoples designs/concepts and then contract it out to another knife making company to produce them with their name on them. The Cold Steel "hatred' comes from the custom knife makers world and not from companies that mass produce knives. With companies that mass produce knives, originality in any design is apt to be limited at best. I do have to give credit to Cold Steel for licensing the Axis lock from Benchmade and I'm sure there are other examples of Cold Steel properly doing business with other companies, but in the custom knife world it is an entirely different mind set amongst those people. All you have to do is go to an actual custom knife show and and talk to the makers. There is a great hatred towards Lynn Thompson (Cold Steel owner) from a large percentage of makers that I have talked to over the 30 years that I have been fooling around with knives. Talk to Ron Lake (designer of the first inter frame), Mike Walker, Brian Tighe, Michael Lovett, and Mick Strider about Lynn Thompson and you might get escorted out of the show. There is no love between most of the custom makers and Lynn Thompson.:twocents:

I don't hate Cold Steel because of their knives. As said above, it's all Lynn Thompson.

If he was a bit different person I would today own a Cold Steel Laredo bowie.

I EDC three knives everyday besides the swissarmy on my keychain and little gerber in my wallet. In my front right I carry a benchmade 551 griptillian which is my go to general purpose and utility knife. I usually wear cargo pants so in my left cargo pocket I carry a Byrd CaraCara 2 with the FRN handles basically as a backup utility knife great blade for the price. And in my back left pocket is where I carry my defensive/fighting EDC knife a Cold Steel Recon 1 with the clip point plain edge blade. this is my all time favorite defensive folder its big, intimidating, and a rock solid razor sharp knife.

I got to meet Brad today at the Knife and Gun show in Lake County today. Talked about some of the carry knives, and rifles, etc. Was great chatting with him. Oh, and stared awhile. He has a great collection of knives, when I need another, I know I will be going through him next time.
