I carry the Bersa Thunder 45 regularly. Practice with it weekly. Very dependable no issues. Inexpensive. My HK USP is great but it's big and heavy...

XD MOD 2 ?

I compared the XDS with the new XD MOD 2. Went with the MOD 2. 45 ACP for me and 9mm for the wife. Compare them side by side. the MOD 2 is a little thicker but comes with 9 and 13 round mags. 13 rounds of 45 ACP, woohoo. Got 'em @ ZX Gun in Ft. Wayne.

I personally carry a custom Colt Officer's ACP, all steel. With that said, however, I have had a Glock 36. Single stack, light, but recoils a bit. I had XS Big Dot tritium sights. Loved it.
