I've been called twice, only had to appear once and they filled the panel before they got to my name.

quick question about Jury Duty... they are understanding about it right? Am I going to be faced with the option of a bench warrant vs. driving 6 hours each way from school for JD and missing a few classes?

Federal level, don't know. Local level, if you tell them you are working or going to school out of town you will be excused, BUT you have to inform them and not just assume.

Ya got me man. I live about 35 minutes from Indy and am currently unemployed. To that note: I just had a killer interview that could result in me having a great job about that time. Hmmm.....

If it was not sent certified mail you can just throw it away if you wish too. If you did not sign for it there is no legal proof that you ever got it.

Forgot to add, it seems if you request and get excused from a jury summons, you go back into the pool faster.

If you're 6 hours away you just fill out the form, (on the back) and let them know and tell them why you can't make it. They'll likely excuse you. I got excused from a fed jury some years ago, because I couldn't make it. Explained it to them and they never contacted me again.

Got it in the mail today. Federal Jury Duty. This should be interesting. I've never been called up before.

I got called and selected for Federal Jury duty a couple years ago. You'll have to fill out a questionnaire they send you (About 3 pages long) and later they will notify you if you need to show up for the selection process. They Federal court lets the opposing attorneys review your questionnaire and they put about 30 names in the pot to show up for actual jury selection. They had the first 12 people selected to go into court when we got there. Both attorneys questioned us and the the jurors were able to request to be excused if they had a valid reason (according to the federal court, there aren't many valid reasons; extreme illness of a spouse or child, knowing the plaintiff or defendant etc.)

Our case was a religious discrimination termination and the plaintiff was suing the City of Kendallville, the mayor and the head of the water department. I was really impressed with the judge - once the attorneys got done with a witness, if the jurors had a question, we could submit it in writing to the judge and she would huddle up with the attorneys and they would allow or disallow the question from the juror.

Once the case was over and the jury gave their decision and the judge made her ruling, she booted everyone out of the court except for the opposing attorneys and the jurors. She asked us to explain our decision and gave us the chance to ask any questions we had. All of this was voluntary and we didn't have to explain anything if we didn't want to, or answer any questions.

If you are selected it will be a great learning experience. We were in court for 5 days. We went home each night, but we had to be escorted everywhere during the day by a court officer (lunch and breaks).

I'd do it again in a heartbeat...... :patriot::patriot:

Really? that's the advice you give..how to get out of it? It's no wonder our justice system is broken...it is based on a jury system where EVERYONE does their part...and you want anyone with half a brain to lie themselves out of it. Kind of like people who don't vote *****ing about our political system don't ya think?

I was kinda sorta looking forward to Federal Jury Duty when I was sent my questionnaire not too long ago.

I was even selected to the juror pool, which surprised me considering my brother-in-law is a federal LEO (had to declare this).

A few days before I was to call in to see if I was selected personally, I got a postcard telling me that I wasn't needed.

We'll see if I get selected again?

I was called 2x for Marion Co. when i lived there) and once for Federal duty about a year ago. I would rather do state court than federal because state court cases usually are much shorter in duration than federal cases.

It is an inconvenience for sure, but its our civic duty.

Got picked up once for a state case. Didn't get to the stage where I was actually at the courthouse, which disappointed me. I was kinda looking forward to it.
