It was acting strangely, as I understand it.

If one of the kids had been bit, you can bet your ass there'd be a lawsuit against the officer.

They subsequently captured it, tested it, and released it.

Kids here know that if they cannot run from an animal acting strangely, they are to throw stuff at it, and just basically defend themselves.

I would have set a rat trap, personally.

Baby squirrels can act strange. I think i would have put on my gloves, picked it up, carried out of the area and dispatched.

If it had rabies and bit some kid, as Josh said, there would have been heck to pay. At least they know now that it is healthy.

Sorry, not true. The only way to test for rabies, is to dispatch the animal and examine its brain. That is why after a dog bite, they usually impound and put the animal down. I can't remember the exact time frame, but the window between exposure to rabies and the beginning of treatment, is very short, and from what I understand, there are a bunch of painful injections involved.

If any rodent is coming at me, and doesn't let me know in plain english that it isn't intending to do harm, I am smoking that fool. Squirrels are just Recon Scouts for Groundhogs.
