If you have an operational alarm system in your home...add a door sensor to the safe/gun vault door.

These sensors are usually hardwired zones or many alarm panels support wireless as well(though placement inside a full-metal enclosure may inhibit the wireless RF transmission).

My gun vault door is such that if the dead bolt is not latched the door swings open enough that the sensor "reads" the door as open.
This turns off the "Ready" status LED on the alarm keypads AND the alarm system can not be set until the vault door is secured.

I have the most perfect system ever invented.

My wife like to yell at me so she checks the safes on the way out of the house in the morning and then she can yell at me when we sit down for dinner.

the system is perfect. My wife forgets to tell me if her tires are low until midnight when its 3 degrees and sleeting outside but she remembers to check the safes every morning
