Some of the Marlins are better than others, but if I ever buy another 45/70 it'll be a Henry. The marlins I owned, just didn't live up to the hype. Hopefully I just got bad ones and everyone else has better luck than I did.

You need to get it threaded for your hybrid too QUE! Then I'll be over here drooling... I'm really wanting to suppress a side loading lever gun!

That is already in the plan. It will be done by the time my stamp arrives in December.

You could always get the M-4 Alaskan Survival, a .45-70 derringer.

The cool thing about .45-70 is that you can load it mild (still very respectable power, though) at factory load levels and have a reasonably comfortable rifle, then (depending on the action strength of your gun) load it up to some really impressive power for use against the biggest critters in North America, including the great bear.
That Henry is one of the guns that can handle the mid-range load data reserved for the Marlin 1895 and Winchester 1886, and I'm pretty sure that you would be legally able to use your new Henry for deer in your state, Que, as I believe you're intending to use it for black bear.
Of course, the top level loads for this old cartridge are strictly for use in the Ruger No. 1, Winchester 1885 "High Wall," or the Siamese Mauser.

I load my 45/70 light, the rifle (a Marlin 1881) was made in 1886 after all, no need to abuse it harshly, I have a 450 Alaskan if I want to be punished. I load a Laser Cast 350br FP with 14 grains of Trail Boss for a velocity of about 1150fps. Shoots very well, low recoil, and very accurate.

You have some of the coolest lever guns out there.
I'd need to hit the lottery to be able to afford some of them, especially that .450 Alaskan and the Model 71.

Count me as a .45-70 fan also. I just have one problem. I cannot find a Henry in stock, or am even able to have one ordered (I tried a Henry gold-dealer). I'm talking about the brass receiver, with octagon barrel model H010B.
I may have to resort to Gunbroker, or the sorts.

The plus side is, I already have everything I need to reload for this caliber.

I once fired a Thompson Center pistol in .45-70 and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. I never gave it much thought after that, except for story telling. Until yesterday. I found a Marlin 1895 at WalMart discounted to $299, and with a $50 mail in rebate from Marlin, on top of that. I'm looking forward to shooting this beast!

A few years back, a buddy and I thought about heading to Maine for a guided black bear hunt. I since sold my Remington R15 (.308) I would have used, so the plan faded away. With this gun, that plan may have just been revived!

I'm amazed at the wide range in performance you can get from this round. I think that keeps it relevant. However, I also love the history behind it. As a history buff, that keeps it relevant enought, for me.

Of all of the guns I own, my Marlin 1895SS is by far my favorite. The versatility in loading is unequaled by any other cartridge I shoot. With cast bullets and tiny charges of red dot powder I can shoot it for little more than the cost of .22LR; loaded to full power it is capable of taking down anything in North America. My friends in KS make fun of my "brush" rifle, but even out there on the plains I found that most of my deer were shot within the 150 yard range of this rifle.

Really like my Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70. I'd like to get a Trapdoor Springfield carbine in 45/70 too.

What's everyone loading for 45-70? I just picked up a Marlin today. I'd love some pointers or a good starting place. Pet loads etc.

I have awesome luck with the Hornady's LEVERevelution FTX's. I use them in both my 44mag and 45-70. I have 2 Henry's. I am setup to reload those too. I shoot & reload other stuff too. I really prefer the FTX's.

From what I'm seeing from googling the ftx's seem to be a favorite of many. What powder are you using?

H4198 has been a great powder. 45 grains. Hornady recommends a list of good powders. I have their reloading manual if you need some numbers. Pm me.

Get started bullet casting, with 45-70 it pays off in record time.

I've got one of their recents, I just like hearing from people out there actually reloading it is all. Usually can tell me more. If I do have any questions I'll shoot you a PM. Thank you I really appreciate it, and thank you again for the powder suggestion!

I don't currently cast because everything I'm loading I'm also shooting suppressed. I may not have to do so with this rifle but I will thread it and add a can. I may use it as an excuse to start casting though, projectiles are not cheap for them, that's for sure.

    .
Lots of molds for 45-70, scrap lead is a lot cheaper than buying bullets in the 4-500 grain range. Been shooting stuff like that for years and casting makes it easy from 45-70 to 458 Magnum.
