Aren't Firestarter sticks made of magnesium?

They're all a combination of cerium, iron, and magnesium (perhaps some other stuff as well). Those that are higher in iron and lower in magnesium throw a lot more sparks and more easily. They are harder, more durable, and last longer. Those lower in iron and higher in magnesium are more difficult to spark, but what flies (little globs of burning metallic Mg) is much more likely to ignite difficult tinder. The downside is that they are softer and don't last as long.

If you're talking about the blocks of Mg metal, that's essentially making little chips of Mg to ignite, which in turn ignite other tinder that is more difficult to light. Once you get the little pieces of Mg burning, they're the same as the globs that fly from a high-Mg ferro rod.

And none of them are good indoor toys.

Thanks for the education. Your pain my gain!

I get caught in this vicious cycle all the time.

    1) watch video
    2) decide I want that gun/knife
    3) watch 65 other videos and read all articles ever written on said gun/knife, deciding its the greatest gun/knife ever
    4) go to store to purchase
    5) see a different gun/knife that sparks my interest
    6) change mind, go home
    Repeat

After 3 cycles, the realization of no money or decision-making skills set in and I cry until I fall asleep

    This sounds familiar

Two hours away from four (4) full weeks, knife-buying clean and sober.

The shakes have started to diminish a little. A little.

Don't I get a chip or something for making it four weeks?
