Felix Kjellberg discusses YouTube's recent partner program changes, and gives some perspective to the smaller channels out there. He emphasizes how difficult it is to make it big with YouTube, saying it's always been a hard business to get into.

Sort of like the secret to making a successful webcomic: Do it before 1999.

    Is that a problem?

    I linked his thread.

He followed that with a link to his thread.

Should we re-post his thread 4 or 5 more times in this thread? It's clear he assumed I linked the story itself, so he wanted to get a quick "I ALREADY POSTED THIS ELSEWHERE" in... without seeing what I actually linked in my post.

Something I do in my "general" threads is post links to other people's threads. So people that are reading my general threads can see other threads that are related to it, that they may not see otherwise.

Ah. Infinite recursion then. That's kinda funny.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!

Rubin creates a brief "test" video called "Capitalism Isn't Cool"... because his previous video "Socialism Isn't Cool" was demonetized.

    * The YouTube star Casey Neistat is leaving CNN a little over a year after the company bought his app, Beme, for about $25 million.
    * Neistat was supposed to develop a new millennial-focused outlet for CNN through the Beme app.
    * CNN said that it would try to find new jobs for Beme employees within the company but that some would be laid off.

YouTube announces plan to combat propaganda | TheHill

Viewers will be able to see labels on videos from government-funded outlets above the video's title on the page.

“News is an important and growing vertical for us and we want to be sure to get it right, helping to grow news and support news publishers on YouTube in a responsible way,” YouTube News senior product manager Geoff Samek said.

"This notice on publishers receiving public or government funding, though still in its early stages, not only carries forward our work in this area through 2017, but represents one of many more steps we will take throughout 2018 to improve how we deliver news content on YouTube."

YouTube "accidentally" gives mass notifications about a Logan Paul video to people that aren't subscribed to him.

Our bad! Sorry for giving free advertising to the most lampooned creator on our site. We'll try to avoid that in the future! He definitely didn't pay us millions to promote him! Really!

Isn’t YouTube full of ridiculously stupid videos?

Yeah, but once you reach a certain height like Paul, you can't keep doing the same stuff. Every major YouTuber out there is competing for your eyes, for the time in your day to get views... it's just the nature of it.

So if you keep doing the same things at level 5... but another YouTuber has pushed it to level 6... You'll have to go to level 7... and so on.

It's sort of a sad situation they're in, because that's all they really can do. It's all about crossing the line and pushing it as far as you can... then further... then further. Eventually you hit a wall and crash.

Going to add this here, because it's also relevant to something else.

Twitch is going to police you for your behavior off platform. Letting corporations become our morality police is a very bad thing. They don't have anything but their profitability in mind.

Twitch says this is to better "govern this ever-changing landscape". That's a very scary word, govern. Who elected Twitch? Blizzard, Facebook, Wizards, Twitter? Why are we letting corporations enforce, in effect, new laws they make up? I know it's their platform... but this is a bad trend to set.

There are already subreddits on Reddit that pre-ban you for participating in other subreddits that they deem unacceptable. Same sort of thought process... we don't want your kind in our community.

Twitch to ban users for 'hate' on other platforms - BBC News

This is similar to the Overwatch leads saying they will take action on users that display "toxic behavior" on other platforms, like Youtube and Twitch.

Agreed but if they’re gonna go after Logan Paul for it then they’re gonna have a lot of work on their hands if they want to be consistent.

Not really. The small-timers aren't a big deal to them.

The big ones, the famous ones like Paul... they are the face of the network. What he does can reflect poorly on them.

John Doe microwaving flies isn't a major incident. Just flag the video and move on. Logan Paul suffocating a fish gets a lot of eyes on it. He's been featured in official YouTube events.
