    So why isn't the .40 called a 10 mm short just like the .380 should really be called a 9mm short? Half serious/half joking.

    I mean in the bigger picture is caliber/mm the same as the overall aversion we have to using the metric system?

    I think it's just about whatever the developer of the round calls it. You develop it, then you get to name it.
