It's a wonderful round and can be had very cheap! With 5.54 it's more important to clean the weapon thoroughly after shooting since much of the ammo on the market is corrosive.

An AK74 is on my wish list. I have never shot one, but I do have an AK47. It's a damn dependable and great rifle. When I got it, it shot way left. I bought a sight tool and got it sighted in. The accuracy was so so. I then added a new lower hand guard and a forward grip. Now I can put every round on an 8" target at 50 yards. That's good enough for me.

I have a Polish Tantal, scoped Bulgy74, and an AR in 5.45x39 cal, but the one that gets fired the most is the scoped Bulgy74.
It is just so fun you can't put it down.:ar15:
It has such a light recoil that my girl friend more or less taken it away from me, she loves to shoot pop bottles full of water & recently pumpkins.
She gets to shooting and gets a big smile on her face, after a mag or so she has to stop shooting because she is laughing too hard.

I was going to either get a Tantal or a 5.45 upper for my AR. When I did the math I got the Tantal with 2000 rounds of ammo and 8 clips for the same price as the upper.

Ive owned a ak 47 in the past & recently picked up an ak 74(thank you 21st century firearms) .I think that is one of the best rifles that I have owned & really nice to shoot ,I dont feel that it is has as much recoil as the 7.62x 39 but from what Ive read about the 5.45 x 39 its as effective . Absolutely reliable thus far as well but mags arent as plentiful as the ak47 but they can be found on several sites

I own ak's in all three calibers, 7.62, 5.56 and 5.45 and can say that for just shooting pleasure I like the 5.45 best. The recoil is far less and just as accurate as any of the others. I also did a little bit of experimenting with my 5.56 after shooting my 5.45 and added the FA Industries ak-74 muzzle break to my 1984 5.56 pre ban Norinco and was amazed at the better control it has. Not nearly as much flip and bounce. The russki's have a winner in the 5.45!

    Just FYI:
I decided to try 5.45 Bulgarian mags loaded with 5.56 ammo yesterday in my 5.56 Norinco pre-ban ak. They worked flawlessly. Fired every round and ejected fine. 5.45 Mag held 30 5.56 rounds and fed all 5.56 without a hitch. Took some feed lip measurements before I went out to range and found very little difference in old 80's steel Chinese 5.56 mags and the Bulgarians.
Interestingly enough though, the steel Chicom 5.56 AK mags will not fit in my ak-74. Sides are just a few thousandths too wide. The 5.45 rounds fit fine in the Chicom mags however. So, if someone has a 5.56 AK and needs cheap mags, there you go!

(Damn, I gotta be careful and not mix up that ammo though.)

The 5.45x39round is for those that think 7.63x39 is too snappy. Weak .223(also weak)wanna-be.:noway:

The 5.45x39 round is wicked cool. There's a reason Russia has been using it since 1974... it's quite lethal, VERY mild recoil and it's lighter weight than the 7.62x39. It's one of the greatest assault rifle cartridges and platforms (AK74) there is. Once you shoot one you'll be in love.

The surplus ammo is cheap .But, corrosive!! Who cares as long as you clean your rifles. I am in the market for one of those ak74 clones myself, I keep looking around. But, I dont see any deals. The round is supposed to be awesome!!
