I don't imagine this will end up a new mil branch. Putting this under USAF makes most sense as they are already operating in space, eg X-37 and ICBMs. Of course, all branches "use" space, what with GPS and SATCOM and intelligence. But USAF is the only one (that I know of) with missions operating/planned in space. I can see USAF funding NASA for some of the exploratory/development/testing phases and then being in charge of the military procurement, tactical & strategic mission execution, etc.

We do a lot in space currently, but I think it's good we recognize (and let the world know we recognize) space as a viable front line. The Chinese showed many years ago their ability to attack satellites. Not only is that directly a threat to the satellites themselves, but the debris can limit where you can operate for decades to follow. Just as we have relied on our air superiority for the last few decades, we need to ensure space superiority. Real "shock and awe" would be warfighters suddenly loosing beyond-line-of-sight coms and GPS, etc.

    I think it's long overdue...It's time....

I don't know if you're just kidding or what but I think the US should have a separate Space Force.
I don't know if these UFOs are extraterrestrial or not but if they are..... well come to your own conclusions.
Hey, it's great to gripe about Govt spending. Ya know what... We're not in the know about what's up with all this Space stuff.
Every time we find out something new then some nut case comes on the TV with all kinds of claims that will destroy anyone's tinfoil. We just don't know BUT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, someone does.
I'm of the opinion that if we don't spend the bucks now it could make Pearl Harbor look like the neighbors bringing over a cake right out of the oven.
I fear our ARs, Glocks, 1911s, and anything from Palmetto State Armory won't even be a viable alternative.

Per someone I know, in the know:

"I heard rumblings about this six or more months ago. It would consolidate the process of getting approvals for launches, all going through Space Command instead of A with NASA, B with military, C with other government branches."

If it makes it easier for private industry to access space I'm all for it.

This all makes sense to me.

Also on the treaty T. Lex mentioned, I didn't know it existed TBH. Per the Wikipedia he linked to:
However, the Treaty does not prohibit the placement of conventional weapons in orbit and thus some highly destructive attack strategies such as kinetic bombardment are still potentially allowable

Watching this video and having some stick time it looks like what he's chasing is staying perfectly positioned in his field of view as he's turning left in a 30 degree bank. Looks more like a reflection off of his aircraft as it moves perfectly with his turn.

It isn't. :) He was able to get IR lock on it for certain periods of time, which kept it centered in the display while he banked. I think we discussed this in greater detail in a different thread, that I can't currently remember. :D

Youve explained perfectly why it shouldn't be its own branch. To be honest, I'm having a hard time believing this was created out of need more than "someone" watching tv and movies, and thinking that it would be a good idea to have a space wing of the military.

For full disclosure if the president proposes having a fleet of Star Destroyers, I'll support that 100%.
