Those that say that a barrier or a wall won't work have apparently never drove by a prison. As someone who used to work at one I can verify that they work and do a damn fine job of keeping people in and keeping people out.

Do we staff a southern boarder wall as heavily as a prison? I imagine if we were willing to spend that much a wall would work pretty well, though not for the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who overstay their visas.

That said its a non issue, Mexican immigrants aren't taking well paying jobs away from us. It's a wedge issue to keep us from talking about actual important issues. Democrats were hand in hand with the Republicans on immigration issues until just recently, when for whatever reason they decided it would be something good to split on. Both sides realized they can drum up money and votes from dumbies who are hardcore team red or team blue.
It really isn't hard, we should have an actual boarder and know who's entering and leaving. We also don't currently have some sort of existential immigration crisis that's not being addressed and is in need of our unending attention or political donations.

Do tell how we are to '... have an actual boarder[sic] and know who is entering and leaving' without some way to confine entry to designated checkpoints and/or patrol the entirety of the border by virtual means. One possible solution results in a wall with budgeting for the necessary enforcement infrastructure as no enforcement means no border regardless of physical barriers. The other possible solution results in the detailing of considerably more enforcement infrastructure to patrol the whole of the border by technical means and still enforce restrictions on entry. Both result in the needed 'unending attention' you speak off, it is just that one is likely cheaper and more effective

We have boarders right now, could boarder patrol always use more money and do a better job? Sure. Is there some terrible new flood of despicable immigration that requires a tenfold increase in our boarder patrol budget? No
In reality Its a boring matter of budgeting, and how much we're willing to spend for what marginal gain in stemming illegal immigration.
The mythical wall is an impractical symbol to prove which team you're on, not a practical solution to an overblown problem.

I can say we need to control our boarders and simultaneously that we don't need a 5 fold increase in spending. The number of illegal immigrants is never going to 0, the real argument is how much money we want to spend.

I support and agree with being prepared to repel all boarders. That's just good seamanship. ;)

    Could be anywhere
Well, this slipped quietly under the wire with pretty much no one noticing.

The Army Corps of Engineers on 26 June let a contract for $5B to provide "horizontal construction services" on the border to 14 construction companies.

    .gov contract gibberish follows:

Burgos Group LLC,* Albuquerque, New Mexico (W9126G-19-D-0041); Southwest Valley Constructors, Albuquerque, New Mexico (W9126G-19-D-0033); SLSCO Ltd., Galveston, Texas (W9126G-19-D-0036); Bristol Construction Services LLC,* Anchorage, Alaska (W9126G-19-D-0039); J&J Contractors Inc.,* North Billerica, Massachusetts (W9126G-19-D-0043); Gibralter-Caddell a Joint Venture, Montgomery, Alabama (W9126G-19-D-0037); Puyenpa Cottles Joint Venture LLC,* Copperas Cove, Texas (W9126G-19-D-0038); Texas Sterling Construction Co., Houston, Texas (W9126G-19-D-0035); BFBC LLC, Bozeman, Montana (W9126G-19-D-0034); JSR Inc.,* Schertz, Texas (W9126G-19-D-0045); Stormwater Plans, LLC doing business as SWP Contracting & Paving,* Glendale, Arizona (W9126G-19-D-0044); Gideon Contracting LLC,* San Antonio, Texas (W9126G-19-D-0042); and Randy Kinder Excavating Inc.,* Dexter, Missouri (W9126G-19-D-0040) will compete for each order of the $5,000,000,000 firm-fixed-price contract for horizontal construction services in support of the Department of Homeland Security, Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Del Rio, Big Bend and El Paso Border Patrol sectors. Bids were solicited via the internet with 40 received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of June 24, 2024. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth, Texas, is the contracting activity.

Read it and weep, Trump's getting our wall (or horizontal construction I guess).

I'm skeptical. First, because if this is what you think it is (a border wall), I have a hard time believing the president wouldn't be playing this up. Second, is this for a "new" portion of the wall, or repairs to the current one. And lastly, the Army doesn't dole out $5B on a whim, that needs congressional approval; so why haven't we heard about this, and the obvious fight that would accompany?
