Last I heard a wolf and a monkey were still loose. The monkey was seen riding the wolf and yelling "Get your hands off me, you damn dirty Humans"

Yeah, bad on having to kill the critters. I'm definately not a PITA person but it's really a shame that they had to kill most of them. God have mercy on the owner too. Things must be terribly wrong for him to have harmed himself and before hand released these beasts.

After this story broke I started thinking about what long arm I would use if this happened in my neighborhood. My first thought was .308 M1A1 but then I figured my Marlin lever .45-70 would put down most anything on four legs. I had worked up some really accurate 405 gr. lead loads. From all I have been able to read about this fabulous old round it is devastating on most anything it hits.

I think my 8mm Mauser, Mosin, or Mosberg with slugs would have gotten the job done. Still a shame the animals had to die. Haven't done a lot of hunting but I hate to see that kind of waste. Perhaps some of the meat can be sent to a homeless shelter or something like that. :(

How unfortunate that they had to kill all of those animals. Sad.

I am a hunter, and definitely NOT an animal rights wacko, but I was disturbed at the loss of animal life, so truly unnecessary. 18!!!! Bengal Tigers. What an absolute waste. I thought the Sheriff was explaining himself waaay tooo much, and I think Jack Hanna was deeply saddened and troubled, at having to condone the loss of all the animals. Thank goodness no one was injured, at least the reasoning was correct.

    From the IndyStar article
Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Merry was among the first to respond Tuesday. He said he shot a number of animals, including a gray wolf and a black bear. He said the bear charged him and he fired his pistol, killing it with one shot when it was about 7 feet away.

So I'm sure tactical reloads are a part of any good officers training, what about tactical underwear changes?

They found the monkey carcass, a tiger took it out.

I believe the wolf is the last animal unaccounted for.

I too am saddened by the loss of life here. I understand the extreme circumstances, how to corral 18 bengal tigers... all on the loose.

That said, they found and killed all these animals very quickly, most were milling around the area of their cages.

Apparently they tried to capture at least one tiger, zoologist tranq'd it but it "roared" and came toward her and the special response team lit it up. 5-10 min for the meds to take affect.

I have to wonder how many of these kills were due to officers placing themselves in a bad location. Sort of like a cop jumping in front of a moving car to justify shooting it, we see it from time to time.

Anyway, that guy was a real POS. If he cared for those animals, he should have known they would have been slaughtered if he turned them loose.

    Sad day. :(

    Stupid cops...they suck.

It really is sad to see this happen. I believe tiger populations worldwide are fairly low, and so many of them were just destroyed. I don't know what else they could have done though. Darkness approaching, lots of innocent people, dangerous animals, no tranquilizer guns readily available. Ultimately, saving people is more important than saving animals.

It's too bad most of them were killed. Big cats, Grizzlys, and Wolves are all top 5 favorite animals to me. I completely understand why they did though. It would be difficult enough to run down one lion and tranq it, let alone 30 lions, tigers, and bears at once let loose. If they took there time knocking them out and transporting them someone could get injured or killed and they would be in a world of hurt.

Sucks that some fine animals had to be put down because of one idiot. A lot of great tigers there. I will never understand how the minds' of ignorant people like this work. Could he really have thought turning them loose would be beneficial in any way?

No, suicide is a selfish act......
he probably wanted people to notice his dead body.
A final act of "look at me".

If you detect no sympathy from me congratulations - the guy pulled a dick move.

The news stated that the guy who owned these animals had been released from prison recently, serving time on Federal weapons charges. I have not heard what those charges were or what he was convicted of? Anyone know what they were?
