I want to take the time and thank all of the people who served our country. I know that you and your families suffered from being away and missing important events in your family's life. I was ready to sign on the dotted line when I was offered a job with the Evansville PD and have been there for 40 years. You guys and gals are top notch with me.

My father fought in WWII and my father-in-law was at the seige of Bastonge. We recently went through his diary and was amazed by what he had and did.

If you want to take a minute and tell me what you did, I would really be interested. God bless you all.

First of all, THANK YOU ..... Second, I did it, because I wanted to ..... I joined the USMC, because I was sold on their advertising.....

I wanted to be the BEST ..... I was school trained for two mos's ..... 3521, basic mechanic, and 3524 Fuel and Electric specialist.....

    I did 4 years A D, from 1977, till 1981.....

I ETSed, and stayed out for 4 years.....

I then joined the INARNG, where I served in Supply, Mechanic, Transportation, and Logistics.....

as an "additional" duty, I also served as a Retention NCO.....

I was finally promoted to SSG, E-6 pay grade, and held that rank for 2 years, and then I Ret., as a DAV .....

I enjoyed my time in, and wouldn't trade it for anything .....

I was Deployed to Ft. Hood Tx., in 2004, in SUPPORT of Operation Enduring Freedom .....

I am NOT a Hero ..... I did 26 years, 1 month and 14 days..... NEVER left the U.S., NEVER dodged a bullet, NEVER dodged a land mine.....

THOSE that did, have ALL MY RESPECT, and I tell them so .....

I was active duty USAF 21 years, 6 months, 24 days according to my DD 214. I grew up on a farm in Washington County, worked at Smith Cabinet (later Child Craft). I joined the USAF to have a future because I didn't see one with the path I was on. I was stationed at 9 different bases, spent 4 years or so overseas (Iceland twice, Korea and Qatar). I deployed once, 2005 to Qatar and turned 40 while I was there. I have never chambered a round in anger, hopefully I'll never have to do that.

Thank you for recognizing what I've done, but I just showed up and did my job.

FYI...anyone in the Seymour area...there is a great program at Trinity Lutheran High School. Open to the public. I've gone a number of times with some friends of mine that are veterans. Left with dusty eyes and a lump in my throat each time.

Yep, just a little dusty in here, or my allergies are acting up, or something. Thanks for sharing that. Amazing the bond that our service men and women develop as they do what they do to defend our freedoms.

When a soldier makes it home

I was messing around on YouTube the other day and found some Arlo Guthrie stuff. I like his music but never figured him for a song titled "When a soldier makes it home."

I suggest everyone just do a Google search for the above. Will take less than 5 minutes of your time - but if like me it will be difficult to watch thru to the end and still be able to talk.

Wish I had the skills to embed a link, but way beyond my computer expertise so you'll have to make the search on your own unless someone can provide assistance.

My respect and thanks for all those who have served, present and past.

As far as not being a hero, not seeing combat, or not leaving the country... I doubt you had any real idea where you would end up when you signed that paper. From where I stand, you are as much a hero as any. You signed up and you went where you were sent. Thank you!

Was never in myself, I regret it sometimes, but I was all career track, and felt safe enough because of what you guys have done for us. I so totally appreciate it, not just on the one day, but every day. Any time I see a vet with a DAV, Purple Heart etc. plate on his car, or a unit hat or whatever, I'll take a moment and get his attention, shake his hand and say "thank you for your service, sir".

Thank you very much to all who served. My Dad served in the Army between Korea and Vietnam. His dress uniform hangs on my office wall in a display case. My oldest son currently serves in the Army (just made SGT!). Youngest son is leaning that way as well. My oldest says he is embarrassed when he gets upgraded on flights, gets bought an ice cream cone by an old lady at the airport or has people come up and shake his hand. I just tell him that they are proud of him. He says, "Dad, they don't even know me". I tell him it doesn't matter, they appreciate what you do just as your own family does and love you as well. My entire family appreciates what YOU ALL DO and DID. It is my only true regret in life that I did not serve when I had the opportunity to do so.

Tell him the way Active Duty were treated in the 60s and 70s.

You ain't a kiddin there! I think about it now and I had absolutely no concept of military bases or where they were located when I was in the Recruiters Office on Eastern Blvd in Clarksville. I did figure it out. When my youngest son was 8 we realized he thought everything (including Grandma and Grandpa's farm in Indiana) was on a military base since that's all he'd known.
