Apparently one town is using volunteers to sit by the road with speed cameras and then write letters to speeders regarding slower driving.

The "volunteer officers" one people are getting letters instead of tickets. On the other hand, I don't know if I can support it or not.

SPEEDING motorists will soon be facing the short arm of the law as primary school pupils prepare to sign up for their own handheld speed cameras.

Then I suggest you travel to the UNITED KINGDOM and tell the Grimsby city council that the actions of these volunteers is offensive and an affront to your American sensibilities.

maybe the mods should create a new forum to keep semper happy... this is general politics,,,which gets a LOT of traffic... maybe he needs indiana politics,,,where he could do all his posting,,,because he dont like it when someone talks about something outside of indiana...

ive seen other boards have a general and state level political forum... if ingo did that,,,that would take care of all of his problems about what other people want to talk about...

On a somewhat related note: When I started driving in Toledo in high school, some nutcase woman was parked out in front of schools and a hospital with a cheapo radar gun (from a sporting goods store, baseball department) clocking folks, then following them to give them a rant. When she started calling 911 and following the people, the police told her to stop, but she didn't. The 11 oclock news even did a thing on her, she was a nutjob, plain and simple. I know of her because I was followed by her and given what for verbally in my school parking lot, only to have her escorted off campus by the school guard (off duty officer) and the school filing a restraining order (hospital up the street she "guarded", apparently harassed alot of students).

She had picked on the wrong person one day and upon the driver's "whatever" attitude towards her, she hit him with her purse and threatened to follow him home. She ended up in a hospital with a concussion to a single blow to her head (punch from the guy). Guy was sued by her family while she tried to remember what her name was, only to lose in court due to her having tons of evidence from over 50 drivers regarding her "aggressive" nature. :D

All in all, this sort of thing has happened in the US (to threadjack, but make thread viable), but not with good results. When it becomes a government "approved" measure, then that's when to be worried.

On a totally related note, this has been done before right here in Carmel, Indiana.

Anyone remember? Think it a good idea or not? I have never seen this topic discussed on INGO. Wasn't even aware of this type of program until I found that article last night.

You libtards! :D What does Carmel have anything to do with Indianapolis, which is the center of Indiana and there fore relevant! Carmel isn't Indiana! Anarchists! :D

Now that I will catch heck from some folks for that crack (and it was a joke, lighten up Francis ;) ), that picture IS sick! Carmel: If our lazy moms aren't doing something passive aggressive or "socially" progressive, they are getting lit up at home with a jug of Vodka and a few Vicadin while you bust your arse off at work and the kids are at school... :noway:

If you get right down to it, many of the speed traps commuters run into are set up because of citizen complaints from busybodies in that particular neighborhood.
IMHO that should not be encouraged.

If they passed a law against it would it be a feel-good, nanny-state or feel-good nanny-state law?

It would be a sad law. Sad for the fact that a law is needed to convince police chiefs that giving house wives radar guns and lawn chairs is a stupid idea.

Seems some here dislike their illegal actions recorded by other citizens.
    LOL! Point taken.

However, speeding is punishable only by a fine.
It doesn't rank high on anyone's list of society destroying activities.
A few years ago I got a speeding ticket and I paid the bribe to the court to get keep it off my record.
    That was like $180. :n00b:
Since then I seldom speed unless it's just from not paying strict attention. :draw:
40 mph in a 30 mph zone is ludicrous IMO.
You can get up to 40 without even trying.
As a matter of fact I usually have to try to keep it at 30.

That picture pretty much sums it up.
It's like Barney Fife without his bullet OR his gun.

So they just write down their plates/description and send them a complaint? Who really cares that they are doing this then? It's no different than somebody in a neighborhood yelling at you to slow down. Let them feel good about themselves by thinking they are helping, how does that hurt you? You can already file a complaint on your neighbors with the board of health if you see code enforcement issues. That's worse!

I remember in the 1970's on my way back to IU Bloomington, I was going around I-465 and some nutjob in some wacky looking car with loudspeakers all over it came up behind me and started yelling at at me that the speed limit was 55.
Once I looked and realized he wasn't a cop but some nut, I just kept going the speed I was going.

There ALWAYS has been and ALWAYS will be people like this with "control issues" and "too much time on their hands".

I thought it was illegal to have radar guns and the like that use "reserved for police use frequencies?" Or does that only apply to motor vehicles? I know that having a working radio scanner in a car can be at least a "red flag" and I think it's illegal. However, having one in your home isn't illegal. Maybe that's the exception they're using to do this?

Either way, it's giving non-elected, non-accountable people a control trip. I'm much more agreeable to the notification signs that I've seen occasionally. It's really easy to go too fast sometimes, especially in residential areas with big streets.

The cops gave them the guns, and I would assume, some minimal training.

Bingo! This is it right here. The lady from Toledo had a record of being very rough on people unless she got her way. Her family was pretty much wrecked from her being overbearing and controlling. She was asked to leave a PTA meeting because she was being boorish in general, demanding the floor at every point.

People who want to do the aforementioned nannying of everyone out there have some serious issues and need to have them resolved. Folks that "will teach you a lesson" for cutting them off in traffic, folks who want to speak to a manager to get someone fired for making their burger wrong, folks who will get noticeably agitated if a line is too long or moving too slow (b/c the time usage is out of their control), etc... classic signs of anger and control issues.

Rule #1 of the civilian handbook: Get home alive at the end of your shift.
    Rule #47: Dont be a ****.

People just need to leave everyone else alone, mind their own business, tend their own lawns, regulate their own lives and move on in life.
