what is your primary planned use for the bow for starters? If it is to be for hunting I am curious why you do not wish to have a compound bow. Just wondering.

Traditionally longbows are 58" or longer, under that and you fall into the recurve area (even thought you can have longer recurves and shorter longbows). To be honest, it really depends on what you want to do with it. A shorter Longbow (I know) is generally used for hunting. If it's for purely target shooting, go for a longer one with lighter poundage. There is several great forums out there just for traditional archery Trad Gang.com

Traditional archery is hard to explain but it's special. It's kind of like fly fishing and flintlocks...There is a beauty in simplicity and a tradition that is thousands of years old..Plus once you learn to shoot one you never look at a compound bow the same way again...I guess it's really about getting back to
    "two sticks and a string".

In answer to the OP's question go ten pounds lighter than you think on pull. 40-50 pounds should be about right. Also remember your draw length will be shorter with a longbow or recurve.

Basically nailed it. I like tough challenges. I have some family that hunt turkeys in down in Texas with them.

Just a slight add: Lower draw weight means you might be able to use it when half crippled from too much yard work, sleeping in a chair, or other ;)

    I shoot a 53# Hoyt for deer.
Would like a little more oomph for using Snuffers again.
    And for 3D something less.

    Not changing limbs.

Will buy 2 other recurves :)
