    Nexus 7 screen cracks easily - xda-developers

I see a lot of them for sale with cracked screens on craigslist and such. Unfortunately the screen assembly costs $150 so there's not much point bothering with the repair.

My N7 has hit the floor a couple times, none the worse. Of course, that was in the gel case. Often people that have had to pay for their own treat devices much better.

I think this is key. I can count on one hand the number of times I've dropped my cell phone in 15 years of owning one. When I hear people talking about how they drop it xx times a day, I have to stop and wonder who's paying for their equipment.

Nothing wrong with that. I think the 7" tablets are still worth it, IF you don't want a keyboard. They are smaller and slightly more portable than a netbook.

The 10" ones serve no purpose, at least as I see it. I use this netbook every single day, in class and in my office. At home, I use a desktop. It is a REAL computer and it's no larger than a 10" tablet.

There are netbooks with touch screens as well, but they cost a lot more. If I hadn't paid $170 for this computer, I might not think it was that great of a bargain.

My Acer tablet didn't cost all that much more than your netbook (you've gotta price shop). It is lighter. It has a better application for reading textbooks. I've used the Kindle app on my laptop and it sucks. I've used the interface on the internet site for the place I rent my e-texts and it is okay sometimes (seems if too many people are accessing it, it slows way down). I surf the net a bit with my tablet, I watch videos, I take some notes. The only thing I want to add is a keyboard, which isn't that big of a deal and is cheap enough.

Nexus 7 is $199, has expandable memory, and is straight Android without the Blackberry front end over top of it..

Nexus 7 vs. BlackBerry PlayBook (QNX 2.0) | The Verge

Two cores on the playbook verse 4 on the Asus. Hdmi out on the playbook and not on the asus. A little better screen relolution on the asus. A bit longer run time and larger battery on the playbook (Since it has only 2 cores most likely.)

I will most likely look at both a lot closer before my purchase. The HDMI out is a plus for the playbook for me for the bedroom TV, Nothing like porn in high def. The asus said video out but not HDMI. Might be a deal breaker might not. Still at now 214 for the 64 GB one and the bridge and teather to the smartphone For me I think the Playbook is the one.

Goolge most likely knows enough about me already. Not really into googles/facebooks/twitters online privacy policy. Not really into the whole Istore/itunes/amazon tie ins to devices either. Now RIM I have had dealing with in the past on a corporate level and they were top notch even when the disaster happened. No email for 2 days, blackberry messanger down, e-pens not uploading to the company billing software Ect. At least they gave everybody free apps for the outage. They do have a store but not like the others. I do/did like blackberries online privacy policy. Have not read it lately. Don't ask don't tell.

My girls both got Acer Iconia's and they have stood up to their three year brother dropping them quite well. We paid under 200 each by keeping an eye out on deal sites such as 1saleaday.com and woot.com. Mine is a Vizio Vtab. Slower than the kids tablet's but was only $149. Acer has a better camera than mine as well. The Acers also came with cords to hook to TV.

    I bought a Surface on 11/3/2012.
After using it for two weeks, I think everyone who complains about the Surface RT and praises their Ipads is clueless.
I never adopted the Ipad because it can't do any thing that my Iphone can't do. (Of note, I am not an Apple hater, we have 2 Iphones, an iMac and 4 iPads in our house)
I am employed by a company that uses Microsoft software to do business. (as are 98% of users in the world)
What I wanted in a tablet is an ultra-protable entertainment device that has the flexiblity to do work if I want/need to. I also needed a seperate keyboard interface and ample storage... all that with a sub $700 price piont.

The Surface RT 32GB with touch cover came in @ ~ $632 after tax.
I can double my on device storage for under $30 by adding a 32GB MicroSDXC card from Amazon... or just use an external drive via the full size USB port.

Can't run "legacy" programs? Use remote desktop and access your entire computer (the citrix app on the Ipads cant even come close to comparing)
Not as many apps in the store? 98% of the 250,000+ apps in the Apple Store are useless ad-ridden banta fodder. Sure, you'll miss the tower defense game you havent played in months, or the weight loss app you never use, but more apps are being added to this platform all the time.

The ability to acess files from someone else's thumb drive or external hard drive during a meeting, creating a Power Point presentation while waiting to see someone, or updating an Excel spreadsheet while in someone elses office is AWESOME!!!

I even play Angry Brids during meetings if I want to. :):
I vote to try the Surface in store and see if it is right for you.:ingo:

To begin with I was thinking about the larger 10in screen. The more i look at them, the 7in seems tempting.

Any pros/cons for bigger vs. smaller screen??

Only thing I could really think of would be slipping it into a pocket.

Also, what kind of battery life do you get on these things?

Specifically those of you that have the Nexus 7, how long does the battery tend to last?

I haven't used one but it is advertised at 8-11 hours. From most of the reviews I've seen on Android forums (I've been looking because my cousin is looking at tablets) have been getting 8 1/2 with 20-30% battery left with heavy use and brightness quite a bit higher than you'd need indoors.

I know with my Acer Iconia A200, I can get through a 10 hour day of class without much issue (usually around 20% when I get home). That includes a lot of e-text, surfing the net, watching Youtube videos, playing games, and listening to music.

    where the work is
This all depends on things you may not even be able to describe or prioritize yet, as far as what your expectations are and what would be the best choice for you in the end.

Since you have an Android phone I would consider staying with that OS unless you hate it.

I use apple products and have an iPhone, and if I could justify the expense I'd probably opt for the 11" Macbook Air, it's a great portable device!

All this said, I'm surfing INGO as I type with my Samsung Galaxy plus 7" tablet, that I got for xmas last year. It's been a great little tablet, though I think the iOS experience is a bit more refined and the application market is still better with apple, but it's very nice to have a small, cheap tablet with expandable memory.

I actually do a lot of work with creating a mobile reporting and data environment as part of my job. As a company, we are mixed right now between the iPad3 and the MS Surface. Before the Surface came out a week or so ago, we were purely iPad.

I've used an iPad 1, 2, and 3, a Blackberry Playbook, a Kindle Fire, a Dell Latitude ST, and an MS Surface.

From a pure ease of use standpoint, it's hard to argue against an iPad. They're dumbed down so much that it is hard to mess them up. They usually have plenty of power to process what you want to do, within reason. My biggest complaint about the iPad is the incompatibility with using Flash. Most of the reporting tools that we use (and a lot of websites in general) are still running some form of flash. With the conversion to HTML5, this is becoming less of an issue, but that requires the site owner (or program developer) to change their output and is completely out of the control of the tablet user.

I haven't had a ton of time to play with the Surface, so I cannot comment too much on that. Generally though, it's pretty solid and the users testing it like it. We allow users to buy their own if they do not want an iPad and some have chosen to exercise that option with the Surface. That's why we have some users testing it, even though our environment isn't setup to support it yet.

I liked the Blackberry Playbook, but it was a 7" screen and the Blackberry App store sucks for as long as its been out. Kindle Fires are good for their price, but the 7" screen is still lacking.

I really like the Dell Latitude ST, it's a 10" tablet with a full version of Windows 7 on it. However, because it's a tablet with a full version of Windows 7 on it, it cannot hardly keep up with a lot of simple tasks. I'm trying to run Firefox on it and it constantly lags in its load time. I was able to install SQL Server Management Studio, and after the initial opening, runs flawlessly.

What I've found with tablets, it all depends on what you're wanting to do with it. Email and web browsing, almost any will work for what you are wanting to do. Unless it's flash based and the iPad says "no soup for you". If you're trying to any kind of extensive business related practices, most tablets will be lackluster at best. If you're in for games or apps, it's best to go with an iPad or any Android based tablet. They have the most mature app stores. MS is still working on theres. It should get drastically better though. They're having an event called "Hack the Planet" or something like that. They're inviting student programmers around the world to have a chance to create apps for the MS Store. Their app count should increase exponentially.

The Nexus 7 probably has the best battery life for a 7". My last a very long time unless I'm playing some power game.

    I'm thinking about the 10"

probably leaning more towards an Android tablet since thats what my phone is.

Nexus 10 hands down, awesome screen and a great product. If you didn't mind going to a 7" the Nexus 7 is really nice as well and dirt cheap!.

Another nice benefit is anything you have purchased to work on your phone can be put on your tablet without paying twice. Add a $35 bluetooth keyboard and you have a full laptop replacement. :yesway:

Well, I appreciate all the advice. Knew I could get many opinions/suggestions here. That's the great thing about INGO.

I went with a Samsung galaxy 2. 10.1" I've only had it a couple days so far, but I'm liking it. I'm still getting used to things, and getting it all setup but I think it will be nice

+1. The keyboard thingo helps a lot. I could type with my thumbs on my ipad, like a big smartphone, but the Asus is a bit too wide. other than that great tablet. 1080p screen which is easily the clearest thing i've seen on ANY gear.

There is a keyboard app called Thumb Keyboard that REALLY makes a difference on the larger screens. It spreads the keys out to the sides closer to your thumbs to make them easier to reach. I highly recommend it..
