    Not far from the tree
I've watched the fireworks from a boat on the East River just north of the Brooklyn Bridge and also just off Liberty Island. Nothing like watching MASSIVE fireworks with The Statue of Liberty behind you.

We LOVE the subway system. Easy to use and fairly cheap.

It's far from a ****hole. My wife is from Jersey City, her father was from Hell's Kitchen, her mom from Bay Ridge Brooklyn. Lots of family in NJ/NYC. We've been visiting every few years since 1993. It's actually quite safe there. In all the 5 boroughs in 2017 they only recorded 300 or so homicides (pop 8+ million), Indy recorded 150+ (pop 800k). To each their own I suppose. People's dislike for big cities is understandable I suppose. Much like my dislike for small towns and rural areas. Not sure how people like that...

And the people there think they're better than everyone else because they live there.

    I feel differently.

I have traveled quite a bit, and very much enjoy seeing the sights. I have always had a good time pretty much anywhere I go.

However, I'm in total agreement with CM on the Northeast. NYC, Philly, Boston, a lot to see and do, but after about 3 days max around those people I just want to leave. Heck, Paris is famous for rude people, but I got along great there in comparison to NYC. I have seen everything there at least once, most things multiple times, don't care to go back because of the people. I am planning to go back to Paris though.

All you guys are making me want to make my wife angry by telling her Im not going lol, and with my latest firearm purchase (that she may or may not know about yet...) I feel I should make her happy. Im going to go, more than likely drive rather than fly. You can carry a folding knife in NY according to what I read on the ol' google machine as long as you do not have intent to commit crime with said folding knife.

Our middle America hospitable mindset was well out of place. We have zero issues starting conversations and getting involved. Not there. Same in the big apple.
Ha, I get that. In 2011 I was in NYC for the World Police and Fire Games. We were staying in Queens and the venue we were competing at was way up on Randall's Island. We rode the subway quite a bit that week. The guys I was with were also conversation starters. On the subway, it was quite comical watching them trying to talk to people. I was perfectly happy to put my earbuds in and zone out while riding. It is a different mentality in large cities that is born from necessity really and I can see why it rubs people the wrong way. I feel just as out of place in rural areas and small towns. Thankfully our great country is diverse enough to have a place that we can all enjoy ;)

Born and raised in Western NY, never been to NYC.

It is 500 miles from where I live in Indiana to my parents place in Jamestown, NY. It is almost 500 miles from there to NYC.

My feeling is not of fear but more of common sense. I'm at home in big cities or rural areas, that part is of no consequence. Mine is principle. Why should I as a gun owner go to a state that literally hates me as a gun owner. Why should they receive my money to support their anti-gun laws? It is not logical. Why buy a gun which is headquartered in an anti-gun state, I will not. I will never see it all and neither will anybody else so I would rather spend my money in a state that respects my civil rights as a gun owner than a state that does not. People on here have changed banks for that very reason or not shopped or eat in stores for that same reason. I as a gun owner am content with that logic.
This is pretty much how I feel, except it goes beyond just gun rights. I don't agree with much of what they are doing in those states, so I will not contribute to helping them financially.

I can be right at home most anywhere we go because we have gone/been a lot of places. Rural to bigger city's. I think once you cross out of Ohio heading east the people are just rude. Not everyone of course but the driving is a good indicator. Sardine can living conditions I am sure have much to do with this.

Go for your wife. Try to enjoy some aspect of the trip, otherwise you’ll be miserable and probably end up in the dog house anyways.

Wife, kids and I went to NYC about 1-1/2 years ago. Flew in, took a Lyft to the hotel and stayed downtown in the middle of everything. Son and I weren't excited about the whole thing but have never been there and decided to humor wife and daughter. It was fun. I don't like big cities and lots of people but it was kind of neat seeing how half the population lives. Plenty to do and see, good food, good entertainment, walked around a lot and never felt unsafe but we stayed out of any questionable areas. My feet hurt almost as much as my first week down in Lackland... not a place I would ever live, but to visit, I have to admit it was kind of fun.

I have been to a lot of places on business. From Buenos Aires, Paris, Boston, LA, Chicago, London, ect... people in NYC were not as rude or annoying as LA by far. Those California jerks have their heads so far up their asses, I don't know how they can breath.

I think you have read reasons to go and not to go ......and both with valid reasoning .
Sounds like you have decided to go , and I hope you can have that knife legally ....Not sure if Pepper Sprays are allowed for carry there ? .........Might add a " Sharp Umbrella " :):
But at least you will also be armed with situational awareness . Not sure how the average New Yorker or tourist is aware of their surroundings . By the way the locals vote , they don`t seem to have a clue on what`s going on .
You can be a step ahead just by being a little more cautious ..........

BTW ......You could not pay me to go there or California :) ......Absolutely NO desire .....

Never been to NYC and have no desire to go. Upstate NY is beautiful, especially the finger lakes region, but the city? No thanks. I always hated going to downtown Indy even as a kid. Just don't like cities. I feel about NYC like I feel about Chicago or any other large city... I'd probably really like them if it wasn't for the buildings and people.

Wonder what is in NYC that cannot be viewed online or on TV?

That combined with vacationing and spending your money to support a free state, I would think there would be no question?

I've been there several times visiting my ex's family and friends. Paused before the state line to unload&bury my handgun in the trunk and used cruise control. Like most places, trouble is usually concentrated in certain areas--the rub is knowing where those are when you aren't local. Crowded areas tend to be safe, kind of like "safety in the herd". I did some growing up near the adirondacks and the finger lakes are beautiful too. NYC reminds of Cairo egypt, just not as dirty. Interesting sites (at least the first time) but the crowds, the pressure with everybody's "NY minute" hustle, are a huge turn-off for me. The "big apple is de centuh of de universe" arrogance and the socialist-derangement-syndrome responsible for AOC getting elected, are another turn off. FWIW it can be like visiting other countries without a passport where you can hear English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Hebrew, and more in the same afternoon. And you can find most any kind of food imaginable. Where else does KOSHER CHINESE cuisine exist?

Is there no legal way for me to carry my firearm?

You are correct sir. There is NO legal way for you to do this.

In fact NY authorities, in direct violation of Federal law, are known to arrest people changing planes at LaGuardia for having properly checked; totally legal firearms in their luggage. While they are waiting to change planes. Yeah, great town.

As for the previous comments about New Jersey.....even worse. Unless they have changed the laws, the odds are that your favorite choice of ammo is a felony there. Hollow point and expanding ammunition is (or was) prohibited for all but law enforcement officers. Possession of even a single round is a felony charge. For every single round.

So enjoy your trip. Send the folks here at INGO a post card. If the return address includes the words "Sing Sing" don't say we didn't warn you.

Two weeks ago I drove to Toronto. I felt naked the entire trip.

I have been to NYC several times and have never felt comfortable there. Like other people have said, the big cities aren't for me.

Wife and I traveled all the 48 states by Motorcycle. The country has some amazing things to see and not all of it is mountains and wilderness. The cities can be beautiful in their own way.

Yes a lot of our trips we didn't carry(because we couldn't legally) and didn't have any problems.
In all our travels the only time/place I wished I was carrying was Bourbon Street on a weekend. Saw several fights and lots of drunk and high people getting rowdy. We knew what we were getting into though and just stayed out of the way. It was interesting that the cab driver that took us there told us to NOT walk past a certain point(a rough part of town says the guy that lives there) and call a cab when ready to leave.

We traveled to a small(100 bikes) motorcycle rally that was held in a different part of the country every year and got to meet some people from all over this country and country's including Europe and Germany.

We met a guy from NY city that has lived there his whole life. He doesn't own a car and has the bike for weekend trips out of the city to unwind. Lives in a small condo that has a parking garage and he says it doesn't cost him anything to park the bike because he can put it in a spot with a support pillar and a car won't fit there anyway. He has 3 grocery stores on his block(a Krogers, a small mom and pop store and a all natural store) a movie theater and night clubs. He said that by the time you get in your car and drive to a place to eat he can walk to dozens of restaurants from 5 star to fast food. A hospital next block over. He said he hops on subway to work and home and any other errands that takes him out farther. He loves the life style.

Another couple we met live in Montana and are 2.5 hours from a Walmart and 1.5 from a grocery store and over 30 minutes to a gas station(Not a convenience store but a unmanned pump just off the road. They love the life style.

I say see the country and remember that when you are visiting a different state that you are the visitor and they are the ones who live there.
There are bad people everywhere and you can run into someone in any town in Indiana or any other state, that you don't like. The bigger the city either Indianapolis or NY city the odds increase as the population goes up. I have met some real jerks in the local small town(not where I live now.....yet) hardware store so it happens anywhere.

I love the big city's lit up at night and I loved eastern California and the rolling foothills and Redwoods and the coastal hyways. Not saying I would live there but still like them. I hate California's politics and would not live there because of that. I gave up carrying my gun for a few days but I would do it again without question to stand in the Redwoods again or be on the coast watching the waves roll in.

Wife was not thrilled one year when our Motorcycle rally was to be at Santa Fe, New Mexico. Said there was nothing to see in the desert and was not interested. We went and both loved it and she still says if she could live anywhere that is her #1 pick. Mild weather and low humidity and mountains on one side of town and high desert on the other. Beautiful area.

We all have preconceived ideas what we like and until we experience them for our self I think we should give them a chance and see the country.:twocents:
