1911......that pretty much describes my growing up as well. If I wanted something outside the 3 hots and a cot I got at home I had to work for it and I did.
Just like you. My paper route was a good source of work. I shoveled snow in the mornings and after I ran my route. A lot of times in the dark. Raked leaves and cut grass. Fixed mowers and built bicycles/mini-bikes etc that I picked up here and there along my route. That stuff was everywhere when I was a kid. The bicycles were just left overs from kids growing up and moving away. People would give them to you to be rid of them.
Thing is, I still had some time for mischief in all of that but never anything major. Just kid stuff. This work ethic is still with me to this day. Hustle and earn. Never take. This is missing today.

We have lived in our current subdivision for about 19 years now. I have never seen so many houses for sale since we have been there. They are getting top dollar and selling quick. I do notice that most of the cars by the houses have Illinois plates. So it's Illinois folks getting the hell out of that disaster of a state. So far most seem to be pretty nice and take care of their property. We had a lady move in next door to us who has been a great neighbor. I always get a little nervous that a couple of d-bags move in, there goes the neighborhood.

And it only takes one crew.
