I think he forgot to add: Not everyone likes hair all over the place, being licked, and having your furniture shredded and stunk up. :D

Ever known a shotgun to be happy to see you... REGARDLESS of how you treat it?

Ever had a shotgun alert you to the presence of others?

Ever had a shotgun brighten your day just by looking at you ?

Ever read about a shotgun saving a family from a fire?

If I have to give up something, the shotgun will be long gone before the dog is EVER considered to be disposable.

    But that's just my opinion...

If you travel alot, or live in an apartment, or have allergies, or don't have time or inclination to train a dog, all its evident advantages are useless to you.

This is a humerus but at the same time interesting comparison. Some of my thoughts.
I put them both in my trunk, drive around and neither were upset about it. These both tested better than some other things I love.
Pertaining to peoples perception of your dog or shotgun...
Both scare the neighbors, or at least the ones that are inherently uneducated about them. Both have populations of people who feel they are able to roam around and cause damage all by themselves. There are widely varying rules posted on store fronts declaring that you cannot bring one or the other into their store.

I sometimes feel my shotgun needs fed more than my dog. Both have a very distinctive sound that will freeze up an intruder in his tracks (grrrrrr VS. schhhhick schhhiiick).
    Good post!

Well in all fairness the owner was getting old and the dog knew the owners wife didn't have the heart to see him suffer. So they went on one last hunting trip where two left and only one returned. The dog in a very caring manor, explained to the wife when he returned that her husband is now living on a farm where he can run free and hunt whenever he wants.

I'm in the "both" group. Dogs of all sizes make great early warning systems. I think I read somewhere burglars skip houses with barking dogs. Maybe a dog statue, a motion sensor, and a barking alarm would work just as well without having the high maintenance of a living dog.
