If I carry my issued G22 or my personal G27 off-duty they are both loaded with department issued ammo. If I carry my M&P .45 it is loaded with personally-owned but department-approved ammo.

I'm really disappointed that no one has gotten angry about this yet. Someone...please?!?!

Love it, I've had it on there for about 10 years. It's hard to hold a flashlight and charge the shotgun at the same time. I do want to upgrade it to an LED unit though.

Good to hear. I have been trying to decide between that and the eotech version, but I read some negative things about the eotech on the internet. Also, everyone on the internet pretty much hates everything.

Until just recently, they issued duty ammo for ALL guns we qualify to carry on/off-duty....380, 9mm, .40, .357, .45

Here's more butthurt material - I drove my police car to BGF when I bought the ammo.

    ...Dear God...

Wait...did you have family members in the car with you by chance??? Then it gets really ugly.

Really? For some reason I was under the impression IMPD received new ammo every six months though my impression comes from no credible source. This makes me feel like I go way overboard when I switch out my EDC ammo once a year.
We used to switch out every year but budget cuts pushed it back to every 2 years. It's really a non-issue with every 2. Every 6 months would be excessive.

I would decide what round to carry based on what performs well to stop an attacker, and what functions well in the pistol. Some pistols are more sensitive than others about the type of ammo you use. As far as the legal defense, I would let your lawyer explain that it is a self defense round, and it was used for self defense. It is far more important that the shoot be justified than what ammo, caliber, model pistol, or color of jacket you were wearing. A modern self defense bullet is designed to expand to have the best chance of stopping an attacker, the fact that it should stay inside the attacker to disperse the most energy is a plus to the innocent potential victim standing in the background. The only way I can see your ammo making a difference at trial is if you do something that is obviously meant to cause unnecessary damage. If you put poison inside the bullet then it is obvious you were trying to do harm not stop the attacker. I would not even be afraid to use reloads as some caution against. I can check every part of a reloaded ammunition and verify it has the best chance of firing and accurately hitting a target as opposed to some factory loaded round that goes down an assembly line with millions of others.

Whatever your chose, test fire it, make sure it cycles the pistol reliably and hits your target where you are aiming. An example is the Kimber Solo, they specified a specific bullet would be reliable, and only that bullet. Many who tried ammo they had on hand found out they were serious when it started jamming. Let the lawyer deal with the bullet issue in court. The lawyer that you should have on speed dial and either know his number by heart of have a friend who has his number and can make the call for you while you are in jail waiting for bail.

For us, Department issued guns get department issued ammo. What ammo that is at the moment depends on what is the cheapest big 3 product to buy by the pallet.

When the pallet gets used up, they buy another pallet of whatever is cheapest then. Sometimes its the same ammo, sometimes they switch brands if they can find another big name hollow point for cheaper.

We have been fortunate that we've been using the same duty round for a long time. It has been tested and proven itself in the field. Of course when buying 200k rounds at a time, we get a good price.

Since this necrothread is revived anyway. Denny, Frank, VUPD, how many rounds are issued to you guys every 2 years? Please don't share if the question is inappropriate. I ask because a single 50 round box is only enough for three magazines in a Glock 22. After 2 years of using the same ammo I would be concerned about bullet setback and the primer compound getting broken up in those rounds that get chambered a lot. After a while you would need to pitch out some cartridges. Every 2 years does not seem like much ammo. Also, do the officers receive plenty of practice ammo during that time?

I have 5 mags worth for my G22 and 3 mags worth for my G27. I am not concerned about setback or priming compound failure, I rarely unload the round from the chamber unless I'm cleaning it or shooting it.

A "standard" issue amount is 46rds. I think we are back to swapping ammo every year...I THINK. Although I carry 61rds on my uniform. Setback is something to watch out for however, most of us shouldn't really be ejecting/loading our pistols often enough to have this become an issue. Once loaded, stays loaded until I need to clean it or shoot it using practice ammo. We average 600rds a year per officer...give/take. Most of that is tactical shooting, minimal "target" shooting. I really feel we have some of the best firearms training in the state, maybe more than that. The guys at the range REALLY put a lot of thought into each course of fire and give us so much out of so little. As an at-large firearms instructor, I don't get out there to teach as much as I would like.

That seems like such a small amount. I burn through that in 2-3 range trips or in the course of a single day pistol class. Then again, I'm generally just putting holes in paper. There isn't a lot of tactical thought behind it.
