I've been wanting to build a 1911 range toy too, but other cool stuff keeps getting in the way.
I looked at the kits over at Palmetto State Armory, but they were out of stock last time I checked.
Fusion has nice build kits as well, but it may carry you over your budget.

Easiest thing to do is get a good used Springfield and fiddle with that.
They have all standard parts so the door is wide open for customizing it to your taste.

Another tupperware EDC guy that also likes 1911s.

Dont stress it OP, you can like both, each for their own reasons. Dont give into the hate! :):

I like my 1911 because its sexy. I like my Glock because it just works, its more comfy to carry, and I'm not worried about dings or holster wear. Like my children, I love them each for their own individual traits.

I recently modified an MC Operator to my liking. Very handsome piece and runs like a MadMan

Just picked up another one and ordered all the parts about an hour ago.

Love my tricked out Operator, runs like a top and with the additions I made it is basically the "perfect" TRP for me at least as I prefer the regular profile barrel and a rail on my Government Model's. It is finally 100% done I added the grips I wanted after VZ had a 20% off sale on weekend I think the CF looks good.

Looks like the model I just picked up this weekend.
I ordered the hammer/sear/disco package to get the ignition controls where I like them to be.
MagWell and a set of sweet grips.

The other one (pic) got the full on bling package as it was scratched up from an idiot that used something to pry it apart for who knows what reason.
AllenM did the colors. I did all the fitting. All the stainless controls and the ignition parts.
Still some fittment to do on the grips and the slide stop is a bit tight.

Ohhh... You may have just made up my mind. I've been reading some articles tonight and all of them like the MC op. Keep the suggestions coming. But that looks very tempting!

These are well fit up pieces. The trigger on mine (just like in the pic) is nice enough I considered leaving it alone but I am a truly sick individual and have no restraint in this area.

Churchmouse, Does it have integral feed ramps and does it have a full length recoil rod? (I now know what this means thanks to 10-8 performance's blog.I feel smart now)

I've been on the phone with SA service and parts the last couple of weeks. The Brazil manufacturing was discussed. It's ALL USA now. Nothing left below the border.

Thats good to know. I have noticed it seems they might have two models one has black rubber pacmyer grips and the other has g-10. Is one newer than the other? Is that the difference between yours churchmouse?

The newer one is the one you want IMHO as it has front strap checkering plus the nice G10 grips. The MC operator has a GI style guide rod and the standard feed ramp build into the frame. The MC is a fantastic pistol and the only other 1911 in the less than $2000 range I would consider would be out of the Dan Wesson Valor/Specialist series but they generally run around $1800 or so and are amazing pistols as well.

This is not a Government but the full sized Valor is very very similar and I like posting gun porn, fun thing about Dan Wesson is absolutely nothing needs changed on them from the get go.

I love those grips Dean. I added a set of CF grips to one of my CZs and really like the feel of them. Carbon fiber has a grippy feel, even when smooth. Plus, they weigh just about nothing. I had not considered doing CF on any of my 1911s, but seeing the photo of yours has me thinking that I need to go that route. Just need to wait on another 20% sale to come around again.
