This Christmas, circumstances happened that I drove my mom's Prius with good (but highway-biased) all-seasons and compare to my wife's Prius that looks like it's wearing monster truck tires and holy crap what a difference it makes.
What are you running on your Prius? Our's needs some new tires.

You should invest in some new rubber.

Tires at that age are definitely not up to the tasks of what they were originally designed for. UV light, heat, and ozone have been working on deteriorating that rubber since they came out of the molds. It's time. If not for YOU, then for your fellow travelers. :)

Yeah. I'm waiting for a decent sale. I still don't see any wires, so I'm good :)

Yes and No, what do you consider All Season tires? Also, bacon!
I've been assuming the defined standard:
All Season tires are stamped with the M+S symbol
Winter/Snow tires are stamped with a Mountain and Snowflake symbol.
Tires NOT stamped with either are "summer" tires.

Whole other categories for street/strip/track tires, offroad tires, high performance (dry weather) tires, etc....

Okay, then yes for me...I don't like changing tires with the seasons. If it's a dedicated race machine it doesn't have seasons...only a season.

Ours still wears the stock FE tires that are like roller skate wheels most of the year. Mom has cooper CS4 touring (H-speed rated, not V. crazy I can remember that after 5+ years but barely remember my anniversary...just promoting the stereotype) as one of the better ones available where I worked. Haven't looked in years though. Don't remember what the winter tires are because I didn't pick them out.

Just got a quote. 275 to replace my tires with standard 50k tires. Yikes...I now know why I avoided it for so long.

I WISH that my tires were that inexpensive.

Well, I guess they'd be that inexpensive if I wanted crappy tires. But who wants crappy tires?

Footwear, mattresses, and tires. Don't skimp on those things that separate you from the ground.

Size plays a large part in price too.

Yeah. A Chevy Cavalier isn't exactly a big car...

My VW Golf is smaller, but it has 19" wheels. My Winter tires are 18", which is also rather pricey.

More than the size of the car, it tends to be the type of car. Cars that are more family oriented tend to have smaller wheels and thus less expensive tires. Performance cars tend to have larger wheels and tires.

Popularity of the exact time size plays a big role in cost as well. The sizes that fit popular cars, think Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Chevy Cruze. They will be less expensive because they're smaller but also because they get to take advantage of economies of scale too.

Personally I get excited if I can get close to $250/tire

I learned to drive in a ‘93 Miata, then daily drive it for 7 years. Summer tires came off around Thanksgiving and the snows came off around Easter. I loved driving it back and forth from Plymouth to Valparaiso and waving at the 4WD trucks that were stuck in a ditch off of 30.

Since learning to to drive I have had two winters without snow tires, both of them here in Indy and I was reminded why I don’t put all seasons in anything. First was with a leased Mazda 3, whatever that left the factory with were he worst tires I’ve experienced. One of thise low drag tires for MPGs that still wouldn’t be sticky after driving through a maple syrup spill. Second was with a set of DWS06 that I tried last year on my Abarth. Yep, didn’t like those either. Bought a set of steelies over the summer on CL with like new X-Ices on them. When these wear out I I’ll probably go back to Blizzaks (my preferred winter tire) or maybe try one of the Nokian tires.

A winter tire is a tool that makes driving in cold, wet, snowy and icy conditions easier.

I did snow/ice management for 19 years, I don't know of a single person that has ever ran snow tires, all-terrians year round on everything.
