In your analogy, a crime has been committed which resulted in an investigation. In Trump's case, there's an investigation with the hope of finding a crime. . .any crime at this point.

The investigation didn't begin with a crime. It began with the belief that Russia was playing games with our election, and then potentially uncovered criminal wrongdoing.

Well if that's the case, I believe that Hillary Clinton is one of the most corrupt and evil people walking the face of the Earth, and as a result, she should be probed and examined like no other human being in history. Good God, there's more smoke coming from her than a forest fire.

I wonder if any elected politician in Washington today could withstand that kind of scrutiny.

I convinced them to stay. It so much more fun watching the Mueller investigation on American soil rather than foreign. No one wants to miss the party when Mueller's investigations reaches it's conclusion.
At this point, it seems most evident that the ending press conference will start something like this.

    Mueller:
Well, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is, I dug and dug and dug some more, and I couldn’t find anything impeachable linking Trump to Russian collusion. The good news is, I did manage to trap some of his people into lies, so we got them on perjury.

Doesn't seem evident to me. Obstruction, I put at greater than 50/50.... and who knows what type of financial shenanigans there might be? And yeah there will be perjury for some people.

My personal opinion is that Trump is guilty of obstruction. As someone said the other day, Lester Holt is Deep Throat. The president went on national TV, and said that he fired Comey because of Russia. Everything else after that point is just adding to the evidence.

The Russian investigation. The reason there is to believe this happened, is because the president says so.
"And in fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said 'you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won'."

Ok, since it appears to me that the presidents words indicate that he decided to fire Comey because he thought Russia was a made up story, and I'm apparently wrong. For what reason did Trump fire Comey?

Who cares? He can fire him because he had bad breath. Do you truly believe the director of the FBI had any special investigative possition? No.

That’s not obstruction. The president can fire anyone he wants for any reason. Now, if he threatened Comey, like that he would be fired if the investigation didn’t return a favorable finding, THAT’s obstruction. Merely firing Comey without materially hindering the investigation is not obstruction.

As evidence that this is so, consider that no obstruction charges relating to Comey’s firing have been brought or even hinted at other than by an ideologically motivated press. The deed was done in the open. If that on it own we’re obstruction it should have been a done deal by now.

Theres no doubt that the goal of the investigation is impeachment. The left knows it. The right knows it. Everyone knows it. So the game may be to keep the investigation going until after midterms, picking up whatever trapped perjuries they can get, in the hopes that they take the House and Senate, and snag an impeachment based solely on the Comey firing. That’s all they got from what I can find. They build up a public belief that firing Comey of itself was obstruction. Then when/if they retake congress, the impeachment will me more accepted by moderates.

That is false, or at least currently unfounded. I would refer you the first article of impeachment of Richard Nixon. "Materially," is open to interpretation, and at the very least allows for further investigation.

There is an interesting discussion of that with Alan Dershowitz—not a right wing ideologue—who compares and contrasts what Nixon did, with what Trump did. One such point was something to the effect that nixon actually demanded an outcome along with threats if he didn’t get it.

Also, Shapiro, who is admittedly a right wing ideologue, made the point that a president has the legal power to fire anyone he wants for any reason, but he doesn’t necessarily have the political power. If congress has the political capital, it can impeach the president and call it anything they want. Obstruction, “collusion”, “poopy” if the public would let them get away with it.

Impeachement isn’t a legal trial as much as it is a political trial. If they have the political capital, impeachment of a president could be simply for not liking the ties a president wears. And impeachment itself has a political cost as well. Does the party that holds congress want to spend whatever political capital it has on that? I think most of the time the calculus on that is no. But in this divisive time I think the answe is ideologically motivated. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
