    I learned to drive with a manual. it was 3 on the tree now thats going back a bit. its funny to see the "young uns"so clueles on certain things like a rotary dial phone or a stick shift. LOL

    I learned stick on a '72 Ford F-250 Camper Special with a 360 2 bbl and a 4 speed...well, 3 plus granny. Impossible to stall. Torque plus low gearing. You could take off in 4th gear if you wanted to, but then it was screaming like a banshee at 50 mph. Good truck to learn on.

    I'm still at least 10 years away from my first kid driving, but my plan is to find a beater car with a manual transmission for them to learn to drive on.

    It's a heck of a lot tougher to text and drive when you need your right hand free to shift gears.

    Kidding. I graduated in '74. I learned to design electronic circuits using a slide rule.
    I learned to drive a huge grain truck at 10, which had four on the floor. I could not sit back in the seat and still reach the pedals.
    My first car was a Dodge with a "push button" automatic. Remember those? That might throw one of these youngsters off as well.

    Semi-related note, My wife never drove an auto with a column shifter until she met me. We went to pick my mom's car up when she went on a band trip with my brother, it was a 02 Buick (took my manual car over and no way she wanted to drive it back). I drove to the parking lot exit and waited for her... then drove back and explained how the shifter worked lol.

    Being stuck on the highway in stop and go traffic for 5 miles doesn't help you want to keep it.

    Been there, done that.
    Put it in first, let out the clutch, take your feet off the pedals entirely, and creep forward at a constant speed, leaving enough of a gap to ensure that you don't have to hit the brakes, as well as allowing other motorists to merge. Which you should be doing anyway.

    This is actually why I prefer my manual in slow traffic. I usually use one of the first three gears and my right foot rather than having to switch between accel & brake

    Haven't found this to be an issue.
