Got it, thx. Problem is that the group buy is way north of where I am in Hamilton County.

    1. there is ONLY 1 county in indiana that being thr corrupt lake county where nwi ingo is at. the rest of you are just wanna be hooisers. ;)

    2. look at the group buy their one of our nwi ingo members goes to the indy area every 2 months. he can drop off to 1 location radios for the indy folks.

Well this has been a great thread. I am getting one shown OP and making my own kit. I recall the INGO supply chain was good way back and likely still is, but I'm way too far for cost effective means. BUT, I did learn a lot, and found my old INGO notes (are the Yassuas still a thing?). I'll start with one of these. What would be great is a bit of help with CHRP and or finding local stations, and places I might travel to where I'd want one for emergency purposes(hiking). Anyway thanks for all the good INGO info. (Now to go study some of those those test prep links in the thread)

    (After the test, a
cheap base will be chipping away at my wallet right?)

    FYI
I am getting reports that the UV-5R EX can NOT accept the UV-5R series of batteries. the EX model is the newest model and its battery design is a bit different and not compatiable with the older model of the same line of family.

the differenxe between the EX and the origianal is firmware and style of radio. the older one is more blocky. Hammers are telling me that functionality wise its the same for a beginner radio. they cant tell the difference preformance wise.

i am waiting to confirm with my vendor is this is the case. if so i am asking the vendor to give us the older model wjich can take the AAA battery as this is more critical in a shtf situation.

it appears their is no battery replacement for the EX right now as its relativwly new.

Another way to get a good deal is look for a hamfest in your area. Ft Wayne hamfest is 17-18 nov. last year I grabbed a uv-6r for $20. Of course there is Parking and entry costs, but if you’re looking for radios and accessories it’s something to consider...

I'd love to get up there for this. It all depends on when we get paid for our crops. There are several radios I'm after, a new antenna, and with the news of the form 1 efile active again I'm chomping at the bit waiting.

Antennas under 16” do not require special govt permissions......

    :):

I've got a BCM 11.5" that's been asking for a stock. It climbs out of it's case and wakes me up at 3 am just like the cat. I can feed the cat and all is well, but when I show the BCM a picture of a stock it just whimpers and goes back to it's case. I feel bad, it needs a stock.

you can solve part of the problem by no longer feeing the cat....

Everyone should have 5 or 10 or 20 of these baofengs anyways. If they stop working throw it in the trash and rotate it out with a new one or buy a new one. At $25-30 each it's a no brainer for anyone wanting to be prepared for a natural or man made disaster.
Hell you can even make a poor mans repeater with these and put it into a modified ammo can or other water tight box and hoist it up a pole or tree and you've just increased your teams range.
Communication is KEY in war and peace. I'll say that again. Communication is KEY in war and peace. Without effective communication you are reduced in strength and your AO is smaller. Comms are a force multiplier. This is why one of the very first things we take out when we go into an enemy country or after an enemy force is their comms. This is also one (1) reason why you will not be able to use your cell phone next to the presidents motorcade.
More people need to take comms seriously.
I wish we had an INGO comms group or something. There is a lot with these small radios and the programming that I would like to learn better. Technology is my weakness. I need to be shown in person how to program it or use it whether it be computers or these dang programable radios.
Sorry for the rant, I just felt it is an important issue whether you are on a local county emergency CERT team or you are just preparing for tornados or floods or TEOTWAWKI or SHTF (beyond natural I mean)

Effective communication and Baofeng do not go together. Why blow $500 on 20 of these bricks when you can buy real gear for the same money? It's your cash though, I urge you to spend it as you see fit.

And I ordered one and the AA pack. In the Amazon questions section some folks said they worked for the EX but some had to file a latch a little,, some did not. Tried to cancel that paert of the order. Of course, it was too late.

    The battery packs are different.

    Newer version 3R-ex battery pack.

The older version 3R battery pack.

I could see how a little filing could make the older battery pack work with the new version.

let me know how the one you ordered works. I bought 2 of the AA holders and they. were epic crap. Barely held onto the radio, and just setting it down on the desk caused it to split apart and send batteries rolling across the room. I returned them.

I have one of those AA battery packs for the UV-5R. I never really use it. It's like this one except it's not by Btech. I looked in my order history and it seems the seller I got it from back in 2014 is gone now.

If anyone has one of these EX model radios and wants to try it out let me know, you can have it. I haven't used it in years and don't really plan to.

ETA: IIRC I had to do some mild filing of the top to get it to fit without popping off the radio like Camerymonkey's did above. Once it was together and fitted to the radio it seemed to stay attached well enough. They are cheaply made and probably not checked for fit very well at the factory.

I do have one of the extended 3800 batteries and it fits much better. There was minor filing but it snaps right into place and holds tight. It fills the hand well, great for playing with satellites.
