I work at a mid-western private University. I see kids all the time paying BIG tuition for schooling that is not going to pay well after they graduate. With big loans to pay off. And possibly have a hard time finding work. Kids that are in the engineering or various medical programs, usually have jobs lined up late into their senior year.

Sadly the human aspect of jobs is being replaced by greed. Too many companies are only focusing on the initial dollar instead of the continuous reinvestment of it. The focus is on getting the dollar, not keeping it.

It's arrogance on a company's part to think that is all about a product not the person delivering it.

Good luck in your job search. Your situation is far too common.

On another note, the older we get the harder it is to switch jobs. There is an obvious bias against older workers.

Personally I prefer to hire someone older because they're usually much more dependable. It all depends on the hiring manager and their preferences.

Although many of us were brought up to be modest, now is the time you need to put into words how wonderful you are and how beneficial you will be to hiring managers.

Don't forget all the key words the robots are programmed to look for.

Most do. Those who don't have the burden of combining of unemployment with "you have an engineering degree! What can't you find a job?" on their backs.

Middle aged guys with engineering degrees are not in demand unless they have one of the highly desired experience sets. There's a Chem E sitting across from me at the temp job and a PhD chemist two seats to my right. And an accountant beside me and behind me. The job situation isn't as good this year as it was last year (when I didn't need it).

Second face-to-face Thursday, waiting to hear back with an offer.

    That's excellent news!

My temp assignment ends tomorrow. It was scheduled to go through 05/01, but the people working on it made better progress than anticipated.

I haven't had any interest in any of my applications for a several weeks, which is . . . discouraging. I keep plugging away, though. And I posted another article on LinkedIn, so hopefully that will get some attention.

Yeah, this is the only really solid offer I've gotten. A couple of other apps finally responded with no interest.

I'm hoping this place comes in with competitive pay to what I'm making now, it looks like a great place to work.

I'm dreaming of getting any solid offer . . . my pay expectations have been lowered dramatically. When I first learned I was being dismissed, I had an expectation of finding a similar job without a cut in pay and thought an increase would be likely. Oh, how incredibly wrong I was. I was underpaid for what I was doing, but so far no one seems interested in paying me at all. That's a sobering realization.

I went through that in 2007. Was laid off, but had 90 days of severance that was going to pay out. I was giddy about it and joked to my wife that we'd have at least a couple of months of double pay. I was very wrong. I was lucky to find a job on the last week of my severance, making 30% less than I was making previously. Things didn't turn around for me until I moved back to Indy in 2011. The job I took at that time paid even worse, but I transitioned over to InfoSec and that helped me to get to where I could make better pay. Took me 10 years to get back to what I'd made previously.

    That's a success story!!

My severance was 4 weeks (two paychecks), which didn't last very long, even with my current austerity measures in place. On the bright side, that was better than a poke in the eye with a sharp pink slip.

Here's hoping you won't have to go too long before finding something that you find interesting that pays the bills... :yesway:
