Interesting. I'm surprised they just didn't cut a check? Just curious (if you don't mind answering), was this a standard Home Owner's/Renter's policy or a specific gun policy? Was there a reason they just did not write you a check? Apologies if I missed that somewhere previously posted in the thread.

I was unfortunate enough to have a handgun stolen from my service truck in a secure parking garage. Attendant had the keys and building secured. No broken locks or windows. I did not discover this until almost home. When I got back to the garage (fire in my eyes) there were only 2 of the 3 regular guys there. The 3rd left before I got my truck back. LEO was involved. They called him back in and he denied everything. Of course. He did not show back up for work. So there you go.

Anyway, home owners covered it. They sent me an exact replacement to my LGS.

I will neither confirm nor deny anything happened to the :poop: bag that took it.

I actually had a similar situation happen 2 weeks ago. I had missed a call thinking it was spam and let it go to voice mail. A couple hours later listened to it and turned out to be a drug task force officer out of Decatur Illinois wanting information on a 1911 I had purchased back in 2013. After calling him back, he informed me that local police along with the ATF had recovered the firearm and traced it back to me but wouldn’t elaborate as to what it was used on. I sold the firearm back in 2014 and still had a bill of sale from the transaction and sent the information over to him and haven’t heard anything back yet. I highly doubt the individual I traded it to was involved and suspect the gun was traded off again or stolen but that’s def a call I could have went without.

I'm generally not a big advocate for a bill of sale on a private party sale, but it sounds like it helped out in this instance.

Standard home owner policy. A check was an option. I chose to have them replace it. Again, the Colt had filled a specific role, jacket pocket gun and night stand gun the wife could use. (It was actually unsecured in the night stand drawer when it was stolen.)

I chose to get a replacement rather than the money because I had a specific role I needed to fill and was just quicker and easier than shopping around for something new.

Got it. I've never had the insurance company offer to assist on replacement on a loss vs cutting me a check, but then I've never asked them to either.

he was making at least a half asses effort. Better than sone.
Yeah, I thought so too. I thought he was running, but he had some decent interaction I thought in some. I'd have no idea what my early post history would've looked like. Before I got to know all y'all, I was probably posting short questions or answering questions (if I could) as concisely as I could.

In real life, I'm not nearly as wordy as I appear to be sometimes here. :):

Well, if someones trying hard and following the rules getting some exercise is probably okay. I remember taking some heat for comments I made before I reached 50 posts...time on INGO is not time in the world. I'm glad I got here but there was a lot of water under bridge before I did.

I got a lot of push back at 1st. Newbie with a dyed in the wool 45 ACP 1911 or die attitude.
I had no intentions of selling any of my stuff but once I actually discovered the classies it was heaven. Especially in early 2012. Lots of great deals and good people. But I have a few infractions. Heck I got one as a Mod....:):

But I never ever sent a butt hurt PM to staff because I screwed up. Never.

Just curious, why do you dislike a bill of sale on a private party sale?
Allow me to jump in here. I automatically stop and leave when I see that a bill of sale will be needed. It's not necessary in any way shape or form and it just exposes to much information.

    OK.
Personally, I want one for my records. In the world we live in, provenance matters -- especially if John Law gets involved down the line.
I don't see recording a name and address, and taking a look at a DL to verify, as an undue burden. But, if you do, that's certainly your right.

I've never gone the bill of sale route, but I have kept a spreadsheet of my sales/purchases and user names. Whether I'm legally at risk for a legitimate sale I made (which should not be the case) isn't the question for me. The overall hassle of explaining my role and the idea that I was involved (legitimately) would still bother me a bit. The original poster is in a completely different situation, obviously.

I did take CM's picture when I gave him some ammo boxes, though. He looked nothing like a mouse, which made me nervous.

I guess my point is this: If something does go south and you are the last legit owner that the John Law family can find, at least one of 'em is coming to visit. Personally, I think the fastest way to get 'em out of your life is to show 'em a factual bill of sale.
    Maybe I'm wrong.
    I'm certainly not a lawyer.
