Why wasn't this inmate considered a high risk transport? Why was this Deputy transporting an inmate with these kind of charges by himself ? I thought this new facility was going to be safer for the staff and the community ? So is their new " modern, holistic, data-driven approach to the Indianapolis justice system" facility less secure than the old jail ? Sure seems like it is.

I know they bragged about how this new jail was going to focus on the mental health and addiction issues of the inmates, but it seems they cut corners when it comes to maintaining control over the inmates. What the heck is the command staff doing over there ? Something doesn't add up.

I would bet "manpower" is the answer. They simply don't have enough deputies to run the facility. As to why, I'm sure it's a multi-faceted issue with recruiting issues, pay concerns, working conditions, etc. etc. IMPD is running short AF, but my understanding is MCSO is even worse. No insider info here, just scuttlebutt and limited exposure due to previous homicides at the jail.

Make you wonder about the transport protocols and facility features at the justice center they just built.
The liberal democrat Sheriff ( he was appointed as U.S Marshall for the Southern District by Barack Obama in 2010 ) and all of his hand selected command staff are to blame. The facility was built with the inmates comfort in mind and obviously the security of staff and the community came second. The decision to run the jail understaffed while diverting staff and money to the Sheriffs pet programs cost a man his life today.

John Durm is a great Deputy and good at his job. One of the best and an avid firearms guy. We have called each other for years to brag about what each of us had found. I have worked with him for 23 years. You could never meet a more positive guy.
I sincerely hope that they fry this guy for what he has done but with the track record in Indy I am betting he will get a slap on the wrist.
My biggest concern now is that he doesn't get a chance to do this to anyone else.

I am once again sickened that one of the good guys has been sent home by some feral human pile of steaming excrement who should already have been put down like the uncivilized predatory rabid dog he is.

WAY past time for public executions at the circle or at Douglas Park. I'm also up for a few less even making it to the jail.

This POS murdered the mother of his child. If he needed transported, why wasn't he trussed up like Hannibal Lecter and tossed in the back of the van like the garbage he is?

MCSO is the largest Sheriff Office in Indiana but they are one of the lower paid. The donut counties all make more. Hard to keep staff when we train them and they can go somewhere else and make better money
You can thank Frank Anderson and Bart Peterson for that.

Sorry about your friend. Sounds like he was a great guy.

I have to admit I was holding my breath waiting for a name. When I saw it wasn't you, I was relieved.

We have a job site right there at the location of the crash (we also built the courthouse and some of the jail).

Road was shut down. Homicide detectives stopped by the job trailer and got the superintendents card and asked if anybody saw the incident.

Apparently a couple laborers were standing and watching, allegedly upset about how the "offender" was being treated during his apprehension.

They can kick rocks. If he can still walk back to the jail, The officers used too much restraint IMHO.

Funny. Karen's on a job site. Noticed you said they were standing around watching instead of working. And they complain about the tax dollars they pay us. Lol

Not so much Karen's, but a certain group playing a certain card.

Superintendent dusted them for not working.

Work was busy and didn’t catch any new.ps. A buddy at the gym told me about it. Him and his wife are friends with the brother of the deputy.

I whole heartedly agree, pos should pay in spades

For those keeping score, the suspect was originally arrested for a domestic violence murder outside of a day care. He shot at police with a rifle during his apprehension and was hit by police, which is why he was being taken for ongoing medical care. He's now accused of kiling a deputy.

I don't see how this isn't a death penalty case at this point, but we'll see. I'm going to leave at that and probably just steer clear of this thread from here on out.

That new jail was well over a half a billion dollars and was "state of the art". Can't wait to see how they are going to spin this story to use this as an example of why they will need even more tax dollars next year.

We've got paramedics that do not want to set foot in there, say it feels very unsecure. I've heard the sheriff's office has similar thoughts, I wonder if something will change now or if it will just be more of the same.

I was shocked to hear the IMPD talking head say that the prosecutor's office had already been to the scene. Dang near fell over when they said that, perhaps hell has frozen over and piece of $hit might actually face justice? Or maybe mears realizes he should try this case since the entire thing was on video and he's dangerously close to a mutiny?

Not likely unless Mears steps down. Effing waste of skin.
