    Splitting a thousand rounds?

Some years ago, I was at the Atterburry range when a new shooter showed up with his AK. I knew he was a new shooter because he made a 2nd trip back to his car. When he returned, he had 2,500 rounds of AK ammo. I kid you not. It was shrink wrapped and he could hardly carry it. I have no idea what he might have been thinking.

Long story short. He loads up a mag, fires one shot, the gun jammed and was out-of-service - end of range session.

At the other extreme, I visited an indoor range on the west side of Indy. While we were there, they turned the lights off on us. We drew flashlights and kept shooting. Yea for that - low light practice!!! After hearing a number of shots come from a dark range, they turned the lights back on. But I digress. As we were leaving, a father and son were on their way in. Both had a handgun and some handfuls of ammo clutched to their chest. No holsters, bags, boxes or cases. Just an armload of gun stuff. I held the door open for them and I have never been back.

I echo the sentiment of some other posters in this thread. There are people right now who have lived through shortages before and still did not stock up when 9mm ammo became dirt cheap. 9mm has been dirt cheap for at least two years. So to see people who are unprepared in a panic, I have little pity for them and it is occasionally amusing.

I confess I learned some important lessons last shortage. But not quite enough of them. I had the right idea, but executed the plan with less skill than I should have.

    Things I did right:
-- I have plenty of powder. Especially the 3 kegs of RL26 that is hard to get.
-- I have pistol powder for 2k or so. I remembered that last time pistol powder was hard to get.
-- I TOOK UP RELOADING AND WEANED MYSELF FROM FACTORY AMMO
-- I have an adequate stash of rimfire that I have the luxury of purging the remington from in the name of increasing quality since I have sufficient quantity.
-- I have a good supply of 5.56 supplies. Bullet weights from 50gr to 88, 9# PP2K and a couple pounds of AR Comp and 8208. Enough SR primers (for now).

    Things I screwed up:
-- Didn't hoard 9mm brass. I always saved my other brass, but not 9mm. No longer. Now I'll save it all.
-- Didn't hoard enough small pistol primers and small rifle primers. Key takeaway: buy CCI41s by the case. I love them as they are incredible all around performers for everything small rifle. They actually seem to be more accurate than CCI 450s despite essentially being the same. And I need to never dip below 1k SPP.
-- Bought too many LR primers. Unless I take up match shooting with something bigger that takes LR primers, it will take me a long time to burn up 2k of Rem 9.5s and WLRs.
-- Should have stocked up on jacketed 9mm bullets.

Basically, I focused on rimfire and 5.56 readiness as well as 6.5 fuel and mostly neglected 9mm. Likely not the end of the world as I can conserve 9mm. But I won't be as sharp or as capable as those who are training more thanks to their adequate stash.

I don't own a scattergun. I wish I did, but I'm kinda glad to have one less variety of fuel to stock. I'd much rather have a deep pile of 4 calibers than a small stash for each of 12.

Next shortage I will hopefully be "*laughing in small primer*" at those who are crying about a shortage. Oh well, at least I've got enough RL26 for a LONG time.

    That's quite a variety.

The bulk of my stock is 22LR, 9mm, 45 ACP, 38 Special and 357 Magnum for handguns. A few boxes of 380 for my Glock 42 and a bag of 45 Colt for my Vaquero, but it has a 45 ACP cylinder as well.

    Rifle ammo stock is 22LR, 5.56, 30-30, 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r.

Lots of 12 gauge 00 buck for my 2 pump shotguns, and a bit of miscellaneous 16 gauge field loads for an old Winchester 24 that's collecting dust around here somewhere.

You've got a good bit of variety too! Collecting C&R guns lends itself to some weird stuff I've found. I still have a box of 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schonauer too, but I don't have a rifle for it... yet. :): I really hope to have one someday though.

I'll stick with 40 since it's been fairly easy to find and prices aren't all jacked up. White box winchester was $16.49 yesterday at RK with a 4 box limit so I grabbed the limit.

Yeah - those who purchased 40's when the caliber was declared dead awhile back are likely loving life right now...

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
I've heard that its possible to shoot 40S&W in a 10mm. Is that true or just internet fable.

    Well, yes and no.

I have .40bbls and lighter springs for my 10mm Glocks.

Since the extractor hooks under the rim it generally will go bang shooting in a 10mm bbl, and something good to know in a pinch, but it may not reliably function many guns and it can crud up the freebore so when you switch back to 10mm it may not properly headspace.

But yes I've done it in all of my 10mms, which is 13 different models.

Prices for 9mm and 40 are about the same price right now (35 cents a round FMJ), and it's still available online if you know where to look. Prices are all jacked up right now, not just 9mm.

I'm loving life because I stocked thousands and thousands of rounds of 9mm when it was dirt cheap and don't have to worry about stocking a dying caliber in addition to the most prevalent semiauto pistol caliber in the world. I considered buying a few 40 caliber handguns a while back, but then I asked myself how much 9mm ammo I could buy with that money.

Basically the same problem you would have using a 38 special in a 357 magnum chamber.
