Not only do women tend to gravitate to lower paying fields, when they do play at the same level as men in those higher paying fields, they often negotiate a lower salary for more flexibility. Bob the VP makes 100k. Bob works 60 hours+ a week, and often leaves after the cleaning crew leaves the building. Sally is also a VP. She chooses to work more normal hours of 40/week so she can come and go at an appropriate time to balance family life, drop/get kids at daycare, etc. since Sally works less than Bob, she is paid accordingly. Now if the Sallys of the world would choose to ignore their motherly duties, they could get paid as much as the Bobs. I have a few friends that are single, childless women. And wouldnt you know? They make just as much as the men because they work just as hard and put in the hours that the men do without requesting the perks of flexibility and time off that the family oriented women do.
I technically make a "womans wage" for my skill set. I could get a job for more, but I choose not to. My company gives me the flexibility I need to support my family in ways other than financially. Yes, I work some long hours sometimes, but I havent "punched the clock" in regards to vacation days in 10 years. If I need time off, even at the last minute, I get it. Need to leave early to take my kid to swimming lessons or join them at the zoo field trip? No biggie. Want to take the day off because it's an odd numbered day? Sure thing. As long as my work gets done and I answer my cell if something comes up I can do what I want. I could find a job at a stuffy fortune 500 that requires drone like 8-5 M-F hours with lots of "overtime" and "mother may I? No you may not take the time off because you dont have any days left. HR sez NO!" But I choose to do what I love, at a company I love, with the flexibility I desire. According to the liberals, I should make just as much as the guy sweating it out at the stuffy office even though I dont appear to work as hard.
Since I have been an attorney, I have NEVER personally witnessed a woman being paid at a different rate from a man. It is common for people who do what I do to be paid in proportion to the income they generate. What could be more fair? What I have witnessed is many women, very skilled at our profession, making choices that reduce their billable hours. This is not a criticism. In my family, my wife does not have an outside job. That is a choice we have made that directly impacts our household income. If, in order to take care of family issues a woman (or a man, but I have seen it more with women) spends more time away from the office, that is a choice they make. If they bill 1,700 hours a year and I bill 2,000+, there is absolutely no discrimination when they get paid 85% of what I do. Yet, the much bandied about 79% number has difficulty accounting for this. It only sees equivalent job responsibilities and equivalent qualifications.
The feminists will claim that it is an inherently biased patriarchal system that places the greater burden of child rearing on the mother. I say it is each family's choice and most women with a family have an innate drive to care for their children while the equivalent drive in a man tends towards provision. Splitting up necessary tasks within a family has been one major feature that has contributed to the advancement of economics and culture worldwide. We should not all be viewed as the same because we are not. Like I said, each family can order itself in the way it deems appropriate, but ignoring nature, pretending it does not exist, or viewing it as oppression is ridiculous.
I saw that movie, Purge, or something?I think there should be "a day without public servants." No police, fire, EMS, trash collection, street department, etc.
The only rallys/protests i can take off, cost me vacation days. And if someone is already on vacation, then i already know it is denied.
My choice is, show up for assigned shift, or don't bother coming in. That's come down from the Union, even covering people on their 3rd double shift.
Act I agree with what you're saying. I brought up the teachers in this because it was stated early on that only women who weren't important were taking the day off, or something along those lines. I wanted to point out that indeed, women of importance took the day off. I feel the teachers should have put the students first, the school administration should have put the students first and denied ALL of them the day off so the schools had to be closed. The administration didn't do that, so that allowed these women to go out and protest what ever the hell they were protesting. I am still not even sure what they wanted or if it made any difference. I don't agree with the way they did it, but I will stand up for them to be able to do it.
As far as women making less. In my position at work, all employees in my capacity start at the same pay rate, male or female. That can increase depending on where you work. I chose a location that pays me more. Yes it is tough, yes there are days I wish I had an easier job. But I know I am working hard for what I earn.
women can do so much better for themselves if they stop putting limitations on what they can do. You can't be a career woman, work less hours than a man and expect to earn what he does. You want to compete, you have to be willing to do what it takes to be equal. I could do even better for myself, but I limit because I still have a son at home. I still have to be Mom. I am not upset at some man for this, it's the choices I made.

these schools could have told the teachers no. They didn't. They canceled school before today. if I ask for a day off, my boss tells me no, I go to work. If I don't go to work I lose my job. That's pretty simple logic. Had the schools stood up for the students and told the teachers no, there would be a lot of vacancies now, vacancies I am sure would be filled pretty quick. Let's lay blame where it needs to be, the administration who felt it was important for these women to attend this "day off" and closed the schools.
I've taken time off work to meet with politicians, to attend rallies, all for the sake of gun rights. I was cheered for that from this same crowd who are saying the teachers should do this on their own time.
