    Potentiometer?

    Or variable resistor? :):

Since it isn't a real "throttle" in the traditional sense of not having a plate that throttles air flow, though I guess there is an argument that "throttle" now means the pedal or lever that makes it go faster (or slower).

Also relevant is that most gasoline powered cars today no longer have a throttle cable between the pedal and the throttle plate, and the throttle is opened electronically. So, the gas pedal is now hooked to a potentiometer that signals the ECM to open or close the throttle, among other things.

Be interesting to see the unaltered data on it when the test is over, if it's available. Like many things green, it may just be a scam.

Wonder how much of an issue all of the added devices are going to have on the electrical system.

Actually, not near as much as in times past. When I started we had electric motors turning assemblies of incandescent bulbs for emergency lights and 100 watt VHF low-band radios (42.42 MHz), drawing huge amounts of current. Now with trunked radio systems using much lower wattage and modern LED lights, I think the motors and electronics inherent to a modern vehicle (ABS, hatch raise and lower, etc, etc) draw far more current than the added police equipment.

With all the time many police vehicles spend idling (using fuel doing nothing) and idling electric uses no "fuel". Yes both will use power of some sort keeping the car cool in the summer and warm in the winter, but I am sure advantage is to electric.

The key here is going to be the MUCH higher electrical load with all of the duty electronics. That's the major reason the ICE is left idling on station.

Radios, Laptops, Lights <- These just aren't a part of the planned load for the Tesla.
Useful range/time between recharges will be drastically lower than normal/projected.

Actually, not near as much as in times past.
While that's certainly true, none of that equipment is included/planned for in a Tesla. Police spec ICEs will get a larger/HD alternator.
Even adding solar panels isn't going to offset the increased electrical usage.

It makes more sense to adopt hybrids for the non-chase vehicles. Carmel did that a long time ago with some of the City fleet. I'm not sure how many police vehicles are for manager-level use, but that's where I think the savings could be found.

"Active-duty" vehicles - to me, as a taxpayer - should be able to catch up to bad guys and withstand maybe crashing into them or more realistically, getting crashed into.

Seriously, it seems like state troopers are more at risk when they have someone pulled over than when they're trying to catch up to them. A Tesla on the shoulder seems like aluminum foil compared to a Charger or something like that.

This is, more or less, my thought on it as well. I see an application for it, just like the application for cops on bikes or horses, but not for an everyday police car.

However... I would actually venture a hunch that a Tesla would be decently suited for highway patrol. They're fast as hell, they weigh a ton (battery), sitting for long hours at speed traps doesn't burn fuel, there shouldn't be too many curbs to hop, and if there is ever a chase there's going to end up being more than one unit called out anyhow, so, it's not like the all Tesla or nothing show. So, I guess I could see Tesla as being your recon vehicles and then you call the normal cars out if you need cavalry support.

I would think this would be the worst idea on earth for city or county cops.

These are, of course, just my thoughts as a bystander.

I don't know about police work, but some of the Teslas (Tesli ?) are insanely fast. This video shows a young man running 7 seconds in the 1/8 mile, (and low 11's in the 1/4 in some other videos on his YouTube), beating some serious Street Class racecars in the process. I know nothing about racing, but it's pretty cool beating Turbo big block race cars with an electric, and doing it silently, and driving your race car to the track and back home.

That vehicle is not pursuit rated. First accident involving an injury is going to result in a lawsuit.

And once you turn on the emergency lights the top speed will be 25 MPH.

If your turbo BB race car runs 11's or even 7's in the eighth you need a new plan.

I noticed they show the price of electricity as a level amount for all five years. They also report the same amount each year for gasoline. Gasoline prices may go up or down. I predict the cost of electricity will only continue to rise. Anyone believing the cost of electricity will decline going forward based on renewable sources hasn’t done their research. We have no hydro. That leaves wind and solar. Don’t know if anyone has checked lately but the sun doesn’t shine all the time nor does the wind blow constantly in Indiana.

Construction, operating, and maintenance costs on windmills is not an inconsequential number. Useful life of windmills, as well as the batteries for the windmill and the vehicle, is not indeterminate. Once the useful life of the batteries in the vehicle has ended, the vehicle value dives dramatically.

Guess a positive thing is that when the cops are doing off duty traffic control and/or security work on their own time in a town police car they won’t have to sit in a running vehicle for heat or air conditioning. I’m sure the town fathers all feel better about themselves since they are doing their part saving the earth. Too bad their good intentions will not produce the result they are claiming.

Followed this guy before. The 0-60 is insane but he got beat on a top speed car as for car chases, you need the top speed. I forgot which video it was but yeah, he was up against a supra I think. Not sure.

Seems a bit Socialist to me. Questionable idea, questionable research and study but since it's someone else's money lets give it a try.. There has to be more to the reasoning behind this, like someone's personal agenda. I can understand testing one but if/when public safety is affected things will hit the fan. If it proves to be a boondoggle someone should be held accountable but we know that only happens if you are one of the peons and peons don't make these decisions.
Good news is we are going to find out very quickly how far this technology has advanced because being a police vehicle, like being a police officer is not an easy life. I doubt it will be too long until they are talking to Fletcher about a "reCharger" of their fleet.
Margaret Thatcher — The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

'Taco Bell'... Thats a good one Doc. See what you did there...

This has to be someone's pet project. We are in a rural school community area and a School Board member is pushing buying a electric school bus. Yes- in a rural community. Its obviously a pet project here too. Stupid waste of public funds.

But doesn't IMPD have a few all electric cars, too?

    Not pursuit-rated. Community patrol / go-take-a-report vehicles.

Why can't a Tesla be used in the same exact manor?

It's not like Bargerstucky is a hot bed of criminal / police activity, after all.
