There is a famous picture by the Associated Press of a SEAL Team member in front of a burning oil field. The name was blurred, but my brother knew him personally. The picture was used by Bolle (because of his goggles) Bianchi (because of the holster) Surefire (duh) and Beretta. The picture clearly showed all these items. So at some point SEALS did indeed use the M9.

Also, I was told that SEAL teams can use a variety of weapons and know from a bonified Team Member that he has seen HK's used extensively, Sigs, M9's, Kimbers and several S&W 686's (because revolver have a tendency to always go bang when loaded).

i thought the seals deep sixed the m9 after a "incident" when someone loaded a "sub gun" round in a beretta and the slide separated at the slide stop notch

On that message from Beretta it doesnt say that the team who killed Bin Laden used M9s pistols, just that the Navy Seals in general use the Beretta M9 like most units of the US military.I believe its true.
And we can assume that all the menbers of that team already fired and trained with the M9 even if its not the gun they used for that mission.
So no matter what gun the person who shot Bin Laden used he probably had lots of trigger time with the M9.

Not to be a thread jack, but I have seen/read many sites stating the military had used 1911's labeled "MEU SOC" over the M9's being issued..and then Kimber came out with a line of guns for that role when the Meu Soc's were worn out.

Just wondering who ended up with these pistols? The Seals or someone else?

At one time in the not-too-distant-past, some of them were also carrying the Sig P220s in Single-Action-Only but, as has been repeatedly stated here, they carry a lot of different things.
I'm kind of doubting that it was a handgun round that killed OBL. I'm hoping it was something like a .458 SOCOM round at close range:rockwoot:

You are right it was probably not a handgun.
We will never know what type of gun, maker and model was used.
But im sure we will still talk about that for a long time here.
Maybe we will know in a few years when one of the menber of the team write a book or something.
Maybe we will just see when the movie comes out. :dunno:

MEU SOC - Marine Expeditionary Unit + Special Operations Capable. Those guns were originally built by the armorers at Quantico from hand picked GI salvaged frames and fitted with new Springfield slides with match barrels and various other parts - all hand fit. I have read they are now buying new complete guns but I doubt the originals builds have been worn out and are still in use. Dave Berryhill was offering an authentic repro of the MEU SOC 1911 but I believe he has stopped building them. Over the years I have read all of Richard Marcinko's books about Seal Team Six ( he is the original plank owner of Six) and he claims they get to use anything they want as long as they can hit a 3X5 index card EVERY TIME with it. Woe be to the man who misses the index card. At one point Seal Team Six was training with small arms so much that they actually used up more small arms ammunition in one year than the entire United States Marine Corps. That would be one hell of a brass pile. Marcinko claims that those days are gone due to budget cutting. If one of those guys decides to shoot you he's not going to miss.

    I wish they had used:

    Rusty prison shank
    Ice pick
    Whiffle bat
    Boots
Drop from AC-130 over the North Atlantic

Being that none of those options fit in line with the character of our nation, I'm just glad he's gone.

Also, while I disagree with our President on many political and economic issues, I feel he and everyone involved (advisors, intelligence, military, etc.) handled the whole thing very, very well.

Now I have this image in my head of a bunch of tactically decked out Navy SEALs storming the compound, blowing the crap out of everything else, but standing around bin Laden in a circle wailing away on him with yellow plastic wiffle bats like a piñata. Then they grab his "intel" (porn stash) and drag his body out to a ship to be dropped over the side into the ocean.

    Awesome.

Last I heard the SEALs were issued the P226. However, the SEALs aren't like other units in the military, they can run pretty much anything they want to.

    Handguns
    P226 9mm
P228 9mm (heard of it but never saw one in use)
HK MK23 45cal (toolbox but not practical)
    MP5 9mm was gold in early 90s.
