at my local school im a custodian, i have 2 brother in laws, sister in law that work in the same school. the 2 brother in laws and mother in law also drive bus at the same school. we have 10 of the 13 kids go to the schools k to 10, i would do everything i can to stop some one that was a danger. a few yrs ago the school started training a few unnamed teachers but the public and lawyers stooped it. i told the rso [current leo hired by the school] id be interested in carrying on 2nd [ i was on 2nd then now first] and he in the works but probably would not happen. i would love to be able to carry at work, at least i can have it in my truck legally now. if i could carry at work i would pay out of my pocket if thats what it took.

    OK, here we go:
Opens with Jim Lucas talking about amendments. This was after a very painful hour of discussion of amendments from last week. Empty school building, wow they beat this dead horse.
My scribbled comments are in blue
Jim intro'd the amendment on opening up to school employees vice teachers.
    - Who knows the school better than maintenance and how many are prior military?
    - HB 1284 covers civil liability

On to the bill. Jim covered delays at Sandy Hook (4 minute response, waited 5 minutes to go in) and the Parkland timeline (so much fail.) Had the 451 page Parkland report, recommends teacher carry. Jim was great.

Rep Pfaff asked where she would carry on her body?
    - WTF??
Asked about paid time off for therapy??
Rep Smith (NRA-ILA F) asked a good question
Rep Burton provided good clarification on school boards having control

Rep Pfaff: is there a service commitment for training?
-Seemed obsessed with asst coaches, WTF?
Jim's reply included "Magic 8-Ball" comment.

    Testimony:

Coach lead off and crushed it.
    - "clear and present danger"
    - went through a lockdown
    - LTCH and NRA Instructor
    - No notes, from the heart!

Paul Aikman, Indiana Student Safety Assoc.
    - Supports, but has issues with the in the weeds part
    - provides training, wants more training, go figure

    Jeff Armstrong, Noblesville West parent
    - opposed
    - This guy is Eeyore
    -UBC=reasonable, BS!

    More to follow...

Jenny Bivens: retired teacher/principal out of Zionsville, opposed.
    - kids are scared of guns
    - teachers can't do anything else

Chris Ligori, supports, local control is a big deal
    - who?
    - small school where?
    - have an intro!!

Mary Ann Ruger, parent, (I can't read my notes on where), opposed
    - Afraid of not knowing who is carrying (I'll take CC for $1,000 Alex)
    - (these are the exact words I wrote): Out there like Pluto
    - Training included for being an armed teacher with special ed students??

David Marrot, Indiana Urban Schools Assoc (IUSA), supports

Keith Gamble (the bald guy who needs a bigger jacket), music teacher, union rep
    - was flat out wrong describing training requirements
    - (I wrote this) DB wants root cause analysis with the 5-whys and an Ishakawa diagram when a response is needed!!
    - BS on doors and cameras being the answer to security

Jim asked about lockdowns at Richmond and Sandy Hook being ineffective.
    - DB gave a BS answer about choosing the best math teacher.

Some of those teacher quotes remind me of -

"Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym"

I'm just now reading through this thread - super interesting how this is all going. KellyInAvon, thanks for the rundown of comments. Definitely both some good and bizarre things (Pluto?) being said about this.

    OK, this should do it.

    All the MDA types:
    - UBC BS
    - teachers likely to shoot students
    - BS on BS polls
    - what they want is a violation of Heller decision
    - funding for bullying and mental health
    - more root cause analysis

Dee Dee Bailey, League of Women Voters, opposed,
    - fingernails on a blackboard
    - 16 hours of training per month to carry, WTF-OVER??!!

Question from Jim Lucas: do you carry?
Answer: how to build a clock
Question from Jim: the training is the same as LEOs receive, do you call 911 and expect them to be able to respond?
    Answer: obtuse response

    Jody from IU:
    I'll skip her screed,
Question from Jim: do you remember the testimony from Chassity Phillips, who shot someone assaulting a DNR officer and saved the officer's life?
    Answer: that's very rare.

Last but not least: Jeremy Gully, Superintendent of Jay County Schools, supports
    - Combat Infantry Badge lapel pin
    - largest geographical school district in Indiana
    - not philosophical, based on 20 years of reports
    - one of three districts that has teachers with access to firearms (bio metric safes)
said, "When best intentions fail, armed response is necessary."

Question from Jim, "Do you have unlimited resources?"
    Answer: "Negative!"
At this point I turned to Coach and said, "Oh I like this one!"

In blue are my thoughts I scribbled down along with comments by the speaker. "Out there like Pluto" (the planet, not the Disney character) was me commenting about the individual.

Me taking notes, is kind of a stream of consciousness in hieroglyphics. It doesn't always translate well.

That's an easy correction. Explaining a Kellyism like "out there like Pluto" took more time :D In other news, WISH TV spelled my name wrong. The spelling of my surname is the most common, but everybody got to add an extra E.

As a teacher at a large Indiana metro school I support this. As a parent, I support this. Coach, I would guess we have some mutual acquaintances...would love to know how I could be of practical support.

Letters and calls as the bill moves forward. If there are more chances at public testimony we need to be there to be heard among all of the wailing by the anti-gun crowd. The legislature will be more steadfast if there hear some support in person I think.

Link to video when available, please.

Seek and ye shall find! Copy/paste from 2019 Legislative session thread. I have to use Internet Explorer to get it to work.

11 Feb Education Committee hearing archive video link is below. I highly recommend skipping ahead to the 1:00:00 mark. The discussion over amendments to a bill about selling off school building made me want to stab myself in the ear with an ice pick.

Too many speakers to time hack all of them. The HB 1253 thread from 64-70 has most of them listed in the sequence they testified.

1:00:00: Jim Lucas going over the bill and amendments. he covers the timelines of Sandy Hook and Parkland towards the end

    1:39:00: Coach (wearing a tie!!)

2:22:30: Dee Dee Bailey from League of Women Voters. You can skip ahead, Coach and I couldn't. Jim asks questions beginning at about 2:29:00. At 2:35:35 she says she out shot the entire Cleveland, Tennessee Police Department. At that point I turned to Coach and asked, "Both of them?"

    2:40:20: Me

2:44:40: IU's own Jody Maderia. Skip to 2:48:50 when Jim asks questions. The exchange around 2:50:50 is worth watching. The video doesn't capture the narcissism required to dismiss an armed citizen saving the life of a DNR Officer because "it happens rarely".

2:52:30: Jay County School Superintendent. One of three schools in the state that has firearms accessible by staff in bio-metric safes.
