I would hope that when people do that they are asking so they have an idea of what you consider fair value of the item for trade.

nope... and when you say sorry only looking for X trade they say let me know when you want to sell it

I think a lot of it has to do with the ads to sell being free. If people had to pay for their ads here or on craigslist they would make the price more reasonable so they could get it sold. Dont get me wrong I like the free ads but the high prices are part of it and easy to work around.
