After my last one was biopsied, the results showed it was mainly calcium.
That's when I stopped drinking milk. I used to have a couple glasses per day. That was 40 years ago and, knock on wood, haven't had another one since.
    Most are calcium.
They USED to tell people to stop with milk and other calcium foods.
Then they had a problem with osteoporosis.

Now they say it's the stuff combining with calcium.

    Dark colas
    Chocolate

Don't remember the other stuff, but I think Brussel sprouts is on there

Yep, Dr had me quit dark colas, caffeine, etc. Increase water, sprite, lemonade consumption (citric acid, etc helps to keep them under better control depending on the composition and what is causing them to form).

Thankfully I've been able to pass ones I have had so far, especially hearing these nightmare stories.
I immediately puckered when I was talking to the dr about possible treatment paths and he mentioned the word "up". I quickly said, please God, no Up involved in this.

    Be mindful of oxalates

Eat oxalates wisely. Foods high in this chemical may increase formation of kidney stones. If you’ve already had kidney stones, you may wish to reduce or eliminate oxalates from your diet completely. If you’re trying to avoid kidney stones, check with your doctor to determine if limiting these foods is enough. If you do eat foods containing oxalates, always make sure to eat or drink a calcium source with them. This will help the oxalate bind to the calcium during digestion, before it can reach your kidneys. Foods high in oxalate include:

    • chocolate
    • beets
    • nuts
    • tea
    • rhubarb
    • spinach
    • swiss chard
    • sweet potatoes

    Don’t drink colas

Avoid cola drinks. Cola is high in phosphate, another chemical which can promote the formation of kidney stones.

Reduce or eliminate added sugar intake

Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to processed foods and drinks. Added sucrose and added fructose may increase your risk of kidney stones. Keep an eye on the amount of sugar you eat, in processed foods, such as cake, in fruit, in soft drinks, and in juices. Other common added sugar names include corn syrup, crystallized fructose, honey, agave nectar, brown rice syrup, and cane sugar.

If memory serves, I actually wasn't told to stop with the milk/milk products but just stopped.
An occasional coke and dark chocolate gets consumed, but rarely.
Plus I find it a necessity to have a chocolate milkshake about 4 times a year. :D

    I'm a chocolate'o'holic.
But I was doing good with one snickers and one cola a month.

    But, success breeds contempt.

Then I was 'finishing off' 3 Halloween bags of candy, and getting a 2 liter dr. Pepper with my pizza.

That kidney stone took me back to the diet.
    By way of the hospital

    Another kidney stone story.

I have had several stones and up until the last one that I have already posted about, I have been able to pass. Usually when I have one the pain is to the right of my belly button through to my back. About 6 or 7 years ago I was down south turkey hunting when one night I was awakened with that pain, I think great here we go again. I tolerated it the next day waiting to pass it, went home that evening still in pain. My wife tried to get me to go to the hospital, but I refused saying it will pass soon. The next day that afternoon the pain went away so I told my wife see I didn't need to go. About 3am I woke up to extreme pain, again my wife said you need to go to the hospital, I refused saying I must have another stone. This started on a late Thursday night, it is now Saturday afternoon, I made a deal with my wife if I still had the pain Monday morning I would go to the hospital.
Well after another day and a half of massive pain I went to the hospital. After a few tests they determined my self diagnosis was wrong, I had a ruptured appendix. They said when the pain went away that's when it perforated and over the next couple of days toxins was spreading around my body. They also said I was a few hours from dying. I had about an 8-hour surgery and spent the next 13 days in the hospital trying to get all of the infection out.
Needless to say my wife made me give up my so-called medical degree and to see a professional from now on.

I feel your pain, worst pain I have ever had. The last one 2 years ago was by far the worst. Went to the ER, confirmed it was a stone and was to large to pass. I was admitted in the hospital met with the doctor the plan was to put me under go in and break up the stone. I wake up with the stone still in me and a catheter coming out of me. Docter said the stone was too big and he had difficulty getting it. So new plan leave the catheter in for a week (that was fun) go back in and remove the stone. Go under again wake up with a string coming out of (you know where). Doctor said they got the stone, but he wanted to leave this tube in for a week to help healing. I said OK when do I come back in to remove this tube? Doc said you can remove it at home. I said say what? You are kidding right? He said just get in a hot shower and pull it out. Well, the day came, and I felt like I was trying to pull start a lawn mower and it felt like it was 3 feet long. Also, when the tube was in, terriable pain.
I hope I never have to go through that again.
Ya stents are a load of fun…start to finish.

My first stone was about 30 years ago, docs did a lithotripsy to blast it, they didn't tell me about the stent till it was done. A week later he tries to remove it, not going smooth! Has me all sedated and he is fishing around in there trying to grab it, I hear him say 'shxt' and then he says 'fxck' , I panick, I show him that I know more curse words than he does, and very loud about it too. He tells the anathesiaoligist 'knock him out, knock him out' . After I wake up, a very shy nurse tells me we are done, you can get dressed and go home. When I get to the waiting room, wife is pissed, tells me everybody in the building heard my language, and she is embarrassed. I ain't happy, she ain't happy, doc ain't happy, and I ain't going to do that again. I have had a few stones since, and I just convince the family doc to write me a script for Vicidon. Just remember, when it comes to stones ' VICIDON IS YOUR FRIEND'.
Didn’t know Vicidon was still used. Had a ton of it on the past. Now always Oxy, NorCo, etc.

After the parathyroid tumor was removed the stones stopped for 12 - 14 years ( another last year ) but resulted in osteoporosis. Now I take calcium supplements, push dairy, etc. Was told worry more about osteoporosis than stones.

I've had 2. Morphine made it bearable but I can't work while on it. Naproxen (Aleve) made the pain disappear. Zero pain while it made its journey to the bladder. I can 100% work while taking Naproxen.

After an excellent meeting with edwea in Indy, I experienced the joy of riding all the way back to Warsaw in horrible pain from a kidney stone. I was riding with a friend and he did a great job talking to me and focusing on his driving, while I wished to die 10,000 times. Wife met us at the ER at Parkview in Warsaw. After four hours of horrible pain, the stone passed to the bladder. Now I have a strainer for catching the stone. This is stone number four in my lifetime.

The CT scan also uncovered that I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm. It was not big enough to admit me, but I have to see a specialist. Getting old sucks.
    Snoop,
    Lucky catch on the AAA
I had mine repaired in 2022 after the aneurysm reached 5cm
I’ve also had kidney stones so I know your pain. Did they mention high frequency treatment for the stones ?
    Good luck
